I hear Jamal Adams might be converted officially to linebacker. I guess being slower than a turd out a constipated cow's backside, and having harder hands than Roberto Duran make for a bad DB.

That seems to be the trend for safeties like that.

C.J. Mosley is the clear leader of the New York Jets' linebacking corps on multiple fronts.

The handsomely-paid tackling machine has totaled 326 stops in 33 starts for Gang Green over the past two seasons. He's earned five Pro Bowl selections in eight years since being drafted No. 17 overall by the Baltimore Ravens in 2014.The Alabama product's experience and credentials are unmatched by any other linebacker currently on the roster. Set for his ninth NFL season, and fourth as a Jet, Mosley, who turned 31 years old last month, addressed reporters on training camp report day at the team facility.

"For me, I want to make sure that I take care of my room first and just make sure that we're always doing our job. Making sure our players on defense are in the right position," said Mosley.

The linebackers' room no longer features Kwon Alexander, but Mosley has high hopes for third-year pro Jamien Sherwood in 2023."I'm excited for what Jamien Sherwood is going to be bringing this year," said Mosley. "He's one of the smartest players on our defense and on this team. He's a hard worker, one of the hardest workers in the weight room and the classroom."Sherwood, a 2021 fifth-round draft choice, played all 17 games last season, but logged only 25 snaps on defense. That total is likely to increase this fall as some needs to make up for the 559 plays that belonged to Alexander one year ago.

"I really feel like he has a great chance, this camp, to show what he's about," said Mosley.

Then, there's Quincy Williams, who re-signed with the Jets in March. After making 100+ tackles in back-to-back seasons, the 5-foot-11 Williams earned a three-year contract reportedly worth $18 million. Just last week, Williams's younger brother Quinnen, an All-Pro defensive tackle, agreed to a massive four-year extension with Gang Green.

"I'm very excited for Quincy. He's another young linebacker. Obviously everybody knows the speed and the power that he has," said Mosley.

In two seasons with the Green & White, the linebacker has totaled 21.0 tackles-for-loss and 10 quarterback hits over 31 contests. By the sound of Mosley's comments, Williams's production is on track to increase in 2023."This offseason, he took three steps when it comes to being on the field, asking questions, understanding the defense," said Mosley. "I think that's the most important thing, especially for our linebacker group — understanding what offenses are trying to do to us."

C.J. Mosley sits quietly contemplating for a few seconds when someone says it is hard to believe he is entering his fifth year with the Jets.

“It’s crazy,” Mosley said after a recent training camp practice.

Along with Quinnen Williams, Mosley is the longest-tenured player on offense or defense for the Jets. He signed a five-year, $85 million contract in March 2019, leaving the Ravens to come to New York and try to turn the Jets around. It has been a wild ride ever since for Mosley, who missed almost all of his two first seasons with the Jets. The general manager who signed him was fired two months later. The coach who lobbied to bring him here only coached him for two games. He had to reinvent himself for a new coaching staff and somehow stay positive through losing … lots of losing.

“My mindset was coming here to the New York Jets, I’m coming here to win a championship,” Mosley told The Post. “By the grace of God, if that works out, just stamp the legacy on there.”

A Super Bowl ring would cement Mosley’s place among Jets legends, but he already has been a driving force behind the culture changing inside the team. He has dealt with plenty of adversity since joining the Jets, but with the progress made in 2022 and the arrival of quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Mosley can see his vision for the Jets finally coming into focus.“I can say my mindset and my goal hasn’t changed,” Mosley said. “It might have gotten derailed, the timing might not have been great, but this moment, what people are seeing now, this is what I imagined. This is why I’m here.”The Jets lured Mosley to New York with a contract that included a whopping $51 million guaranteed. The offer was too good for Mosley to turn down and he liked what he saw with a team that had good, young players in Jamal Adams and Sam Darnold and was also adding veteran running back Le’Veon Bell.

“We had some weapons,” Mosley said. “Things looked good and then it didn’t work out.”

That is an understatement. Mosley was having the game of his life in Week 1 against the Bills with a fumble recovery and an interception for a touchdown along with six tackles. But he felt a tweak in his groin during pass coverage and he ended up playing just one more game that season — in Week 6, making the injury worse and requiring surgery.A year later, he opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns. The team bottomed out at 2-14 without Mosley, and Adam Gase, the coach who pushed for the Jets to sign Mosley, was fired.

“For me, it was an eye-opener,” Mosley said. “The two things you don’t want to happen when you sign a new contract — you don’t want to get hurt and you don’t want to deal with a new coaching staff. I had that in the first two years. It humbled me a lot and put a lot of things in perspective.”Mosley was at the Jets’ training center the day new coach Robert Saleh arrived in 2021. Saleh mentioned to Mosley that linebackers in his defense had to be able to cover. Mosley weight about 245 pounds at the time and was known more as a run-stuffer. When defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich repeated the message to Mosley about coverage a little later, he got their drift.

Mosley lost 15 pounds to fit into Saleh’s scheme.

“I would say my lifestyle outside of football changed,” Mosley said. “I stopped going out as much. I kind of focused on more how I can better on the field. When you turn your attention to one thing, other things are not as important anymore. It really was what are you going to give up to do your job and try to be great?”Mosley began studying Saleh’s former linebackers — notably Fred Warner in San Francisco and Bobby Wagner in Seattle. He won a skeptical coaching staff over and went on to win the team’s MVP award in 2021. Despite his personal success, the 4-13 season was a tough one for him.

“There was a lot of losing,” Mosley said. “I’ve always been on a team where there might be one or two players where you see they’ve checked out because we’re not making the playoffs. I saw some people flat-out quit. It really hurt me. I knew what I was coming back from. Even though we weren’t winning, it was tough to see that. You expect more from your brothers and teammates you’re on the battlefield with every day. Once the people that wanted to leave left and we made some moves, had a big draft in ’22, you saw it right away.”

The additions of Sauce Gardner, Garrett Wilson and Breece Hall energized the team last year, but Mosley again saw the team miss the playoffs after its six-game losing streak to end the season. This offseason, he watched like Jets fans as the Rodgers pursuit played out.“For me, it was, ‘I’ll believe it when I see it,’ and when I saw it, I still didn’t believe it,” Mosley said.He watched Rodgers’ appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” from his parents’ home in Alabama.“It was a cool experience,” Mosley said. “I’ve never watched anyone else say they wanted to come here. That was like a LeBron decision type deal.”

Mosley and Rodgers now compete each day on the practice field with Mosley acting as the quarterback of the defense and the two of them trying to outsmart each other.“It’s upped everybody’s game,” Mosley said. “You can just feel how everybody picked up the pace from downstairs to upstairs, just practicing against him, going through walk-throughs against him, reading off his coverages, listening how he talks to the offense, it just builds confidence for everybody.”With Rodgers now leading the offense, Mosley believes the Jets may now be able to realize his goal of winning a championship here after all the twists and turns since 2019.

“All of that crazy stuff led up to where we are right now. I’m very optimistic,” Mosley said. “I’ve always been that way even though it’s been tough.”

Mosley, 31, has five Pro Bowl selections, including last year, and been second-team All-Pro five times. He has made plenty of money and earned plenty of accolades. Now, he is thinking about his legacy and how he can lead the current Jets to a Super Bowl and leave his mark on future Jets teams.“Once I hang ’em up, I can say I did a great job if we get a ring out of it and once I’m done playing, these young guys can keep that going,” Mosley said. “They’re definitely on their way.”

Vikings looking at options to move Danielle Hunter, sources say

Jeremy Fowler - Jul 29, 2023,

The Vikings have evaluated trade options for Danielle Hunter in light of his ongoing unhappiness with his contract, with sources from multiple teams saying Minnesota has made the former Pro Bowler available.

Hunter does not want to play on his $4.9 million base salary for this season, so the Vikings have tried to find creative solutions should they fail to reach a new deal with him. Hunter, 28, skipped organized team activities and mandatory minicamp and is not practicing during training camp after missing the offseason program.Minnesota's approach isn't necessarily new, with the understanding that Hunter likely wants a trade or release, absent a new deal. The Vikings have attempted to extend Hunter, but not on a long-term deal the player feels is commensurate with his skill set, sources said.

Coach Kevin O'Connell said Saturday that he has spoken daily with Hunter in the team facility and remains optimistic that an agreement to begin practicing can be reached. For now, however, O'Connell would not reveal what, if any, work Hunter has been doing."My hope is that we can work towards him being out on the practice field with us sooner rather than later," O'Connell said. "He's been great. Looking forward to taking it one day at a time. I've not tried to hide my feelings. Danielle Hunter is a very special player. As soon as we can get him out here, you'll see him out and our fans will see him out here."

On Tuesday, when Hunter reported for the start of training camp, Minnesota general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah stopped well short of saying the pass-rusher's future has been resolved.Asked whether he was confident Hunter would be on the roster this season, Adofo-Mensah said he was "really excited to see him.""It's great to see a great player like that," the GM said. "Great Viking -- really excited. So I just want to make sure I say that, and that's where I'm at right now."Hunter is in the final season of a five-year, $70 million extension. His salary is low this year because of a reworked deal two offseasons ago.

He returned last season after two years of injuries and recorded 10.5 sacks, even after transitioning from a 4-3 defensive end to a 3-4 outside linebacker.

Information from ESPN's Kevin Seifert was used in this report.

I'm very excited for Sherwood this year.  Love to hear he's been studying the playbook, studying the LB position, hired a nutritionist and has spent the past year working on his body in the gym.

Why does it take guys like 3 years to figure this out?

When you have an advantage early you don't learn to do the little things which add up over time. When your athleticism is matched by your opponent you have to make sure you're doing everything else, but sometimes ego gets in the way because until then you didn't have to do the little things.

I’m not that worried about us at LB. For starters I would have liked to resign Kwon as well. But I think how good he was last year is being overrated. He was solid. But nothing great. So it’s not a glaring hole him not back. I like what I hear about how Sherwood has looked. You have to trust development in the nfl bc you can’t pay everyone.

The biggest reason why I’m also not that worried, is that I see us doing a good amount of sets where we only have 2 LBs out there. Amos and Whitehead like playing in the box. And Adams is more that rangy FS that we didn’t have last year. And we have 3 incredibly talented CBs in Sauce, Reed and MC2.

Billy Riccette   -  August 5, 2023

After working out a few linebackers Saturday, the Jets signed a pair of linebackers, Nick Vigil and Sam Eguavon, as reported by their agent David Canter.

Vigil was drafted in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft out of Utah State by the Cincinnati Bengals. He spent four years there and has bounced around since then, making stops with the Chargers, Vikings and, most recently, the Cardinals.Vigil has played in 89 games (53 starts) and has recorded 443 career tackles. He had 13 tackles in four games last season for the Cardinals before being placed on injured reserve early in October.

Eguavoen came into the league in 2019 following three years with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League. He spent four seasons with the Miami Dolphins, appearing in all 66 games (seven starts). He has 71 career tackles. He was mostly a special-teams player for the Dolphins but did start six games on defense for the Dolphins in 2019.

By Ryan Dunleavy - August 8, 2023

Ignore the year listed on C.J. Mosley’s birth certificate.

On a Jets’ roster invested in 39-year-old quarterback Aaron Rodgers, 37-year-old left tackle Duane Brown, 36-year-old defensive tackle Al Woods and three others who already have celebrated at least 32 birthdays, Father Time doesn’t have his sights set on Mosley.

In fact, the 31-year-old linebacker only seems to be getting better with age and defying conventional NFL logic.

“That’s exactly what’s happening,” Mosley said. “It’s really a mental and physical thing. … I’ve been feeling great coming into camp. My mind and my heart have been happy playing football, being here with the Jets. And I really feel like I’ve been playing my best ball under this defense.”

Two years ago, it seemed as if Mosley would be out of the NFL by now.

Mosley played two games in 2019 before he was lost to groin surgery, and he opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns — prompting a need to reestablish himself as an elite player in order to quiet talk that he might be another Jets free-agent bust who became a salary-cap casualty.“Once I got back, I knew what time it was,” Mosley said. “This is a business. I was coming off two years off of injury with a big contract. I had to come in with the right body shape, with the right mentality. One thing I never let go is people questioning my game and my work ethic. When I came back, I knew I was going to be a different guy — same results, but a different guy.”Same results indeed. Mosley’s two highest single-season tackle totals (168 in 2021 and 158 in 2022) have come since his return from the gap year during which he trained alongside his brother in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

“When we go to [battle], we go behind him,” second-year safety Tony Adams said. “That’s our leader. He’s a person that is consistent — going to bring it every day. Age is just a number. C.J. is playing great ball.”

Matching wits against Rodgers as the defensive signal-caller during practice is a fresh challenge for a seen-it-all veteran.“The best part of camp for me is during our walk-throughs when both sides get to go through their checks,” Mosley said. “One of the coolest things I’ve seen so far is I saw one of their formations so I called it out the play. He looked at me and said, ‘What did you say?’ and changed it. I was like, ‘Oh, that’s different.’

“The first day in OTAs he did one of his no-look [passes] and took me off my position and threw the ball. That’s another way he got me better. Now I’m just locked in on being in my spots and playing off him.”Mosley is a five-time, second-team All-Pro, but his selection last year was his first since he left the Ravens for a five-year, $85 million contract in 2019. He is attacking training camp with a tenacity that suggests “it would mean a lot” to become a first-time first-teamer.“Every year I’ve made it — and every year I didn’t make it — I feel like I’ve been one of the best linebackers in this league,” Mosley said. “That’s just the pride I put in myself.”

Not that Mosley is spending too much time prioritizing individual goals at this point.

“I expect every person to come here every day ready to be the No. 1 defense,” Mosley said, “and ready to help this team win a championship.”

Because Rodgers’ arrival has increased expectations to levels not often seen around the Jets, Mosley feels like he is reliving his college days at Alabama or his first five NFL seasons in Baltimore.“Every single year you are expected to win a championship or a Super Bowl, every single year you are expected to win the division, every single year you are expected to win the conference,” Mosley said. “That builds the mindset that, ‘I need to be prepared every time I come into the building.’ That started from a young age and hasn’t changed at all for me.”

Jets' All-Pro Linebacker Tosses Some Dough in Hoboken

Headlining premiere episode of new original series, NFL veteran fools fans on camera in local eatery

C.J. Mosley may have a future as a pizzaiolo after his playing career comes to a close.

The New York Jets' linebacker went undercover in a local pizza shop, fooling unsuspecting fans and challenging them to “outweigh” him in a 50lb bag contest.

Starring in an episode of "Undercover Athlete," produced by Whistle, Mosley visits Napoli’s Pizzeria in Hoboken, NJ to take on the task. Having once been a Hoboken resident myself, this segment was particularly intriguing as Napoli’s is a neighborhood staple and one of the go-to spots in the one square mile that is flooded with pizza parlors. The premiere episode of the new original series opens with Mosley entering Napoli’s, being introduced to Jocelyn Volpe, the owner, and wife of late founder Frank Volpe. The 31-year-old linebacker then gets shuffled off to the makeup chair as a subtle disguise is applied. Next, he slaps on a “New Guy” name tag and gets right to work.

Chef and manager Jaedan Gonzalez welcomes him to the pizza world and shows him, Napoli-style how to make his first pizza by rolling, kneading and tossing.“Overall, besides rolling the dough and everything, I think I can put pretty good toppings on a pizza, Mosley said. “I think I could easily say I’ve eaten over a thousand slices in my lifetime.”Mosley then moves from the oven to taking orders from customers.

Viewers get a glimpse of the grizzled veteran asking patrons who their favorite pro linebacker in the NFL is to which one replied “I don’t know what a linebacker is.” He got a bit luckier with subsequent customers who knew exactly who he was and called him out on it. There were a couple people that Mosley simply out-ed himself to, so thankfully he was only making pizza and not serving as an undercover cop or federal agent. The sign on the counter reads “Answer for a free slice: Are you Gang Green or G-Men?” One man responded “Giants” and Mosley, without hesitation responds, “No slice.”

Once realizing they were dealing with Mosley on candid camera, the fans' reactions were priceless. The following segment included a sandwich board advertisement “Show us your strength for a free pizza” where customers, and even those passing by, could walk in and elect to compete. What they didn’t know, however, is that it would be against the 6’2" physically-fit Mosley who weighs 230 pounds.

People of all genders and sizes inquired about the challenge and found themselves next to the five-time Pro Bowl selection performing physical lifts of a 50-pound bag of flour. I think Mosley went easy on most of them except for one. A man with a big build walked in and accepted the challenge and it appeared that when you put he and Mosley side by side, he could offer Mosley a run for his money. He was a Giants fan to boot. Both men fired up the shoulders and delts by holding the 50lb bags out in front of them with arms extended. It was short time before both men had their arms shaking but they didn’t give in and pushed to the limit. Ultimately, all of the patrons won the free pizza and got to interact with NFL linebacker, even the Giants' fan.

Between the competition and customer service, it was heartwarming to see genuine fan reactions in a town that lies just a few miles from MetLife Stadium.Face recognition in the NFL is harder than most other sports since their faces in their primetime moments are many times covered by their helmets.

“People know me on the field, but they are not used to seeing me outside of sports. I was unsure how noticeable I would be in quite a different setting, said Mosley. “It was a ton of fun to go undercover at one of my local pizza shops in disguise, test and ultimately have some incredible interactions with my fans.”
