Jets to Release Denzel Mims if no Trade Partner is Found

It appears the Jets are going to put an end to a years long project and release Denzel Mims if no trade partner is found.  This, according to Brian Costello of the New York Post.  The wide receiver has struggled mightily over the past three seasons, seemingly amassing more drops and penalty flags than receptions.  Plenty of talent but didn’t work out.

The Jets plan on releasing WR Denzel Mims if they can’t find a trade partner first, according to sources. Mims, a 2020 second-round pick, will get a fresh start somewhere else.

It’s a disappointing end for a player who showed flashes as a rookie out of Baylor just a few seasons ago but fizzled in his past two seasons.  In fact, Mims played just 9 games as a rookie and had more yards (357) than he would post in his next 21 games (319).

After missing the first half of his rookie season due to injury, Denzel Mims' first year stats were:

Games: 9
Rec: 23
Yds: 357
TD: 0

In the two seasons since then:

Games: 21
Rec: 19
Yds: 319
TD: 0

Don’t be surprised if a team who loved Mims coming out of college is willing to give up a day 3 pick for a player who they may view as a prospect who was in the wrong place at the wrong time with Gang Green.

The Jets have also reportedly informed Mims of their plans and excused him from reporting to training camp to likely avoid any issues or injuries while the team shops him.

The Jets informed Mims he was being waived and excused him from reporting for camp. Teams are interested in claiming Mims so it is possible someone could make a last-minute trade for him to guarantee they get him.

Would have loved to see him playing with a real QB in Rogers. Personally I would have given him on more year to see what happens. If his play were to improve, at the very least if the Jets were still considering moving on from him next season, his trade value would certainly improve.

This must have been painful for Glenn. He neg repped and vehemently disagreed whenever I posted anything negative about Mims.

Measurables are only part of the equation for football players. Drive, heart, intelligence, dedication, selflessness are all factors as well. Mims doesn’t have it and neither does his draftmate Becton.

Because that’s where we are. Jets got no takers from quiet inquiries so now let it be known with this “leak” that the fire sale is on and they’ll take a 6th or 7th from any team that wants to jump the FA queue.
