With three empty roster spots to fill after trading Denzel Mims and placing both Chuck Clark and Diontae Spencer on IR, the Jets filled two of those spots today.  Gang Green signed free agent wide receiver/kick returner Alex Erickson and safety Dane Cruikshank.

We've signed WR Alex Erickson and S Dane Cruikshank.

Erickson racked up over 2,400 kick return yards from 2016-2018 and posted a career high of 529 receiving yards in 2019 as a member of the Cincinnati Bengals.

Meanwhile, Cruikshank, who has spent time with both the Titans and Bears has just four pro starts.

I was wondering why Diontae Spencer was not listed among the guys taking reps for returns.  I didn't realize he was hurt.  I think Erickson fits the bill to fill that slot.  Basically "backup" return man.  A guy that will adequately fill the need for a reliable punt/kick returner if necessary, but you are not super worried about him getting poached because he isn't a roster player, he is practice squad until needed.  He is basically a slot guy. Not much in the jumps, but very good in the agility drills. Wisconsin walk-on to All Big10.  Came out in 2016 and 30 years old, so, like Spencer, he isn't a guy teams are looking to develop or poach.  Must be durable.  Played every game until last year when he bounced around from practice squad to active for Washington.  He does have a 500 yard receiving season under his belt, but that was with a ton of volume in the year they tanked for Burrow.  Otherwise he has been fairly efficient.

Cruikshank was a 5th of the Titans back in 2018.  Mostly played specials until 2021 when he got a ton of run at safety in a secondary that featured Bradley MacDougald, Matthias Farley, Buster Skrine and had Avery WIlliamson at LB.  Then they let him walk in 2022 to the Bears where he got hurt.  Solid athlete seems to play a ton of specials.  About 60% of team reps even when he doesn't play that many games overall.
