OtherwiseHappyinLife
1. Jamien Sherwood can cover tight ends, not just in zone but when the Jets line up or are forced to play man 2. Tony Adams is a legitimate NFL starting Free Safety who can cover the deep zone If these 2 things come to fruition, then the Jets D does not have any glaring weakness and the team is that much stronger for the next couple years. Anyone go to camp today and see these guys in action? If there’s a QB who can attack weaknesses, it’s a cerebral vet like Rodgers. No news day 1 is good news.
shuler82
Sherwood was a college safety so coverage shouldn’t be a weakness Adams is a backup? Amos will be our FS

Amos will be our FS Amos is not a free safety. He’s a strong safety who has become a major liability in coverage as he approached 30. Adams opened camp today starting as free safety, with Whitehead at strong safety. Sherwood is not athletically gifted, even as a linebacker. He also hasn’t been very good in coverage in preseason games. Jetsxfactor had a stat on this the other day. But small sample size and the Jets seem to see something they like in both players. Mosley and Quincy are not strong in man. Mosley is pretty good in zone; Quincy not so much even as he improved in other aspects of his game. Clark was the guy who could man up against TEs. Kwon was good at this prior to the Jets but slipped last year as he improved vs the run. Jets got crushed against the TEs in big moments last year .. against Detroit and Seattle in must win games. Popular Post Integrity28
Eh, I think the real big bets are: 1. 40yo QB doesn’t fall off cliff 2. Phenom RB recovers from torn acl 3. Becton + Duane Brown is enough (or drafting a Center fixes the gaping holes at LT) 4. Team is deep enough to waste roster spots on guys like Randall Cobb 5. Maybe that stuff the OP wrote, but not really 7 1
Popular Post slats
The Jets ran a nickel defense about 65% last year. That will potentially increase this season with opposing offenses actually needing to score to win. Mostly, that was at the expense of the LBs (Quincy 70%, Kwon 49%). Reed, Sauce, Mosley and Whitehead all basically never left the field, and as long as they’re healthy I’d expect to see more of that. Kwon wants more money but he’s also unemployed in July so if the Jets feel they need him, he’s probably available. At safety, the Jets ran more with two SS types most of the year (Joyner 76%, Parks 18%, Adams 10%). They let Joyner and Parks go, Amos takes Joyner’s spot and Adams probably sees an increase in load. Ultimately, I think this is a position where the Jets could be looking for a body during cut downs, especially if they believe they’ll need more FS/centerfield type play to go along with their (presumably) higher scoring offense. At the end of the day, though, it will be scheming that gets it done (or doesn’t). When the Jets play the Chiefs (for example) I’d expect a CB on Kelce a lot of the time. If the holes on defense are one LB on a team running nickel 65% of the time and a safety, I think they can deal. They might have the best CB group in the league, and their DL is right up there, too.
Larz
JD Will definitely be looking at Will and S on Mega mini draft day.

Agree on the Chiefs strategy and overall scheming. Disagree on who starts at Free Safety. Agree they’ll be looking at the wires if no one steps up. #27TheDominator
As @slats pointed out they have less than 3 LB on the field most of the time. Third LB really is not a starter on the this D. At least any more than long snapper or punt returner. I thought they might plan to roll with Clark in place of one of the LBs and maybe they will still do that with Amos. They had something like 854 snaps without 3 LBs on the field last year. I think Amos played more free safety than people give credit and I think the ideas about "coverage" get a little skewed with these alleged "advanced" stats. A guy might not be the best in man, but can be excellent at covering a zone and being where they are supposed to be. It depends what they are going to ask and how they fit the scheme. One thing I don't agree with slats about is that I don't see Joyner as a SS. I think of him more like a slot CB hybrid that is good against the run. I don't know how they see Adams, but none of these guys strike me as single high types except Davis which might be part of the reason Davis doesn't see the field since Gregg Williams left. There is every reason to think Adams will be fine. They liked Pinnock, but waived him to keep Adams. The Giants picked up Pinnock the week before the season and he played half their snaps. These guys obviously prefer Adams. Do you want guys that can play or do you want a name? If you want the name, we have Amos. He is probably not a bad option and he is the floor. If Adams is better he should play.
bonkertons
Adams looked really good in the time he was on the field last year. He seems like a safer bet to me than Sherwood, who I really have no idea what to expect. At least with LB though there seems to be a decent pool of youth to dig into if it comes to that. Beyond Adams at FS, we're basically looking to make a trade.
