Training Camp Predictions

Recommended Posts

Praying for good health.  What are your own predictions?

1. Free Safety:  Tony Adams wins the starting free safety job

2. Sub LB:  Jamien Sherwood wins the job.  Jets do NOT re-sign Kwon Alexander

3. LT:  Duane Brown is kind of handed the job.  There is no real competition

4. LG:  Laken Tomlinson is kind of handed the job.  There is no real competition

5. Center:  Tippmann edges out McGovern late

6. RT:  Max Mitchell wins the job over Mekhi Becton.  50/50 chance Becton is traded

7. WR2:  Allen Lazard wins the job over Corey Davis

8. TE2:  Jeremy Ruckert beats out CJ Uzomah … handily

9. QB2:  Zach Wilson instills enough confidence to not bring in a vet

10. WR6:  Jason Brownlee runs away with it

I would think if Becton is healthy he is the RT, maybe even the LT and there isn’t a chance he’s traded

Lawson is in the last year of his deal, and JFM starts getting into the big, non-guaranteed money of his contract next year. I suspect they’ve been loading up on DEs with those things  in mind.

I expect both to have monster years. We have a good chance for a 3rd rd. Comp pick for Lawson & Becton and a 5th for Davis next year.

0/100 chance Becton is traded.  I think he wins the LT job but too early to tell.

Lazard/Davis are WR2/3.  I don't think the Jets will make much out of the depth chart there.  Both will play most snaps.  It will be interesting to see who gets more in the 1/2 and 2/1 formations.  Could be Lazard but it may be a week-to-week thing early on.

I can get behind all the others and I'll add one question:

Can Al Woods play RDT next to Quinnen (as opposed to behind him in the depth chart)?

Yeah, I felt like throwing a curveball in there on Becton.  You’re probably right but I would never say never and something tells me Max Mitchell is going to give him a fight on the right side.

Al Woods will lean heavily on running downs and Quinten Jefferson on passing downs so I could imagine that changing based on the competition.  Would expect Woods starting against run heavy teams like Baltimore and Jefferson against pass happy teams like KC.

Question back to you:  do you really believe LT competition is open?  Saleh specifically pointed out Center and Right Tackle as open comps. Something tells me it’s Brown’s job at LT unless he plays like garbage.

I will take Saleh at his word which is Becton has to earn it

We haven't seen Brown yet.  Mekhi is out there working.  I don't know how he's looked but my hunch is that if he looks good, like his rookie season, he'll be the starter and Duane will be the backup.  If something happens to Mitchell, it would be interested to see if they swing either Brown or Becton over, but that's hopefully nothing more than a hypothetical.

I guess it comes down for me to Becton at his best > Brown at his best.

Is Mitchell at RT better than Brown at LT? I’ve been thinking all along that it would be Brown on the left and Becton on the right (primarily because Brown probably can’t play RT), but you’re right - he’s gotta get off the PUP list if he’s gonna win a job.

Brown's a pretty tough dude. I think he will be ready. If Becton balle out gonna get interesting. A problem the Jets would love to have!

If I'm reading Over the Cap correctly they can cut Duane Brown and free up like 8 mil

I love how you do not even acknowledge RG!!  no need, right?

But then who's the backup LT?

Becton LT

Mitchell or Turner RT

the loser of that battle is the emergency swing

Where is Duane Brown, by the way?

I could see JD doing it, they still need to find like 30+ mil cap for the Rodgers extension

Damn that would be a ballsy move (cutting Brown). Scary thought. He could be an extra piece if Becton returns to form. But he is a great insurance policy.

Saleh said Brown would be back soon.

After what happened last year, I can’t see them getting rid of any O-Lineman.

I disagree with #'s 3, 6, 8.

I think the Jets would be foolish not to re-sign Kwon Alexander, but I just don't know what the Jets will do.  I am ambivalent about #5, but I think that McGovern will start the season as center #1.  Just a feeling.

I think that they want to keep Davis and Lawson so that when they go FA after this year, the Jets get quality comp picks for them.

If Lawson plays well, as a DE, he may get back a 3 or a 4, Davis probably a little less, Becton (IF healthy) brings a 3rd rounder comp unless they franchise him.   The problem with franchising him is there will be those who said if JD had picked up the 5th year option it would have been cheaper than the Franchise Tag

I think all the Becton stuff is being overblown.

LT: Becton with Brown as backup

RT: Mitchell with Turner as backup

LB: I’m buying the early reports that Sherwood is killing it. I think he plays the Kwon role.

QB: I think Zach lights it in the preseason games given fans hope of a post Rodgers QB (might be false hope but hope nonetheless)

RB: We do not sign anyone

Certainly makes sense, but if the whole group is healthy by the end of camp, I don't think there's enough room?

Perhaps only if JFM and Clemons are also considered swing DT's, could we carry so few tackles and so many ends?

Huff's gonna get traded.

I’d say the no chance Becton gets traded is a bit premature. Hughes has an article out today speculating the same. He’s not getting reps with the first team. Tomorrows practice with pads will tell a bit more I’d gather.

Unless they get back a player this year, I don’t see the benefit.
They were down to bare bones last season with injuries. Why not hold on to the depth? Considering Duane Brown is on his last leg.

Contractually, he makes the most sense. Also, he and McDonald are similar players, so if McDonald at least flashes in training camp, I think it'd make sense.

Would be happy to just keep everyone, but I do wonder how all these dudes are going to see the field.

Not so sure about the becton prediction. There’s no substitute for cubic inches and becton is a huge man.

I thought they were moving Clemons inside, which is why they had him bulk up.

Then again, I'm wrong a lot.

Unless he isn't healthy or gets re-injured, I don't think Becton could ever be beaten out by Mitchell.  I don't think it takes but a week or two for Tippman to beat out McGovern.

I agree with and like the rest.
