Who Else Are We Bringing In?

Recommended Posts

I’m just trying to connect the dots.

We still have just under 20mill in cap space. I’d imagine we aren’t keeping Mosley at his 21mill cap hit this year, as well as Davis at his 11mill. I see us easily able to shed another 5-10mill in cap space or more with those 2 guys. Plus some others that will get cut as we trim the roster as Week 1 approaches. I’m sure we want to keep around 7mill for any in season moves we might want to do as well. So I see it as we still should be able to spend another 20mill after reworking CJ and Davis.

I can’t imagine Rodgers agreed to that 35mill pay cut and only getting 9mill this year, unless he was told we’d still do more with that remaining cap space. That’s the logical reason.

The question is who? And even how many guys? Because with that much space it likely can be multiple guys.

Trade for Evans and cut Davis

I was beating this drum incessantly before the draft. But the Bucs since restructurered him which makes it very unlikely. The dead cap would be bad.

I don’t really think there will be any major moves.

Seems like this was a pre-agreed upon estimated sum behind closed doors, looking at multiple years. Something like, “we’re gonna do whatever it takes to get you but you have to rework your contract and take a big pay cut so we can build a competitive roster for more than one season. Do you want to win?” Much less to do with this moment when they actually sit down and sign the contract and JD needs to squeeze out cap space.

JD is just putting himself in a position of flexibility. I think guys like Davis and Mosley are staying right now and he will do what can to restructure but the team is pretty much as you will see it except maybe a late depth move due to injury.

The Ts can’t seem to get fully healthy and I can see JD scoop up the first good vet FA T once cuts come. But that’s about it.

DALVIN COOK:  Look Mr. Douglas, I want to come and play for you, but I need an extra million dollars.

JOE DOUGLAS:  I hear you Dalvin.  I want to introduce you to one of your potential teammates.  Meet Aaron Rodgers.  He has something to say about that million dollars.

I could see that to an extent, given how there's not a lot of places left to spend it this time of year, but then it brings into serious question the reasoning behind forcing money already spent into future years of so many deals, including this one.  There's a sh*tload of void years floating around in Jets' contracts these days they'll have to pay, you'd think if there's money to spend you'd start paying some of that now before others are ready for their paydays.

While not necessarily all of it, you'd think there has to be plans to spend some of it to motivate this contract structure, whether that be Cook or potential trade opportunities.

Any solid OT tackle’s available?

George Fant, Taylor Lewan, Eric Fisher, Jason Peters

And why are we still talking Dalvin Cook?  Ezekiel Elliot, Leonard Fournette, Kareem Hunt and Kenyan Drake are all still available.

I would throw Brown into the mix of cap casualty.  He could save about $5 Million.

If a premier tackle becomes an option.  Possibly a team that may look to the future and make a player or two available.

Bryce Huff saves $4 Million, same scenario.

So many RBs on the Market.  I'm not sure who would be the best fit, but I have always like fournette.

I'm not a fan of Davis and can be upgraded.

Just thoughts.

Jets are set with Izzy until Hall is healthy.

I think we will be opportunistic. There really isnt a position group that desperately needs reinforcements unless an injury happens. Even OT has 4 capable players. We have depth at RB.

Dalvin Cook is not necessary but I could see us signing him at the right price. Other than him, we likely wait for cuts.

I don't see Huff getting cut. Out of that RB list, Cook is the guy.

I'd sooner support the return of Curtis Martin than the signing of Elliot.

We are set right now at running back. If we sign Cook that means Hall is not gonna be ready for the first few games.

Yeah, if this happens I'm just assuming that means Hall is going to the PUP list.  There's nothing to suggest the team is looking to get rid of either MC or Izzy, and only so many RBs to carry.  Things certainly can't be feeling too good for Bam though.

The point is, you don't let good players go.  If Cook was let go, he may not be any better than Elliot, Fournette, or Drake.  So, if you are looking for a 'hold the fort' player (which all of them at this point would be), why keep banging the drum for Cook when he wants so much when one of the others would probably sign for half the amount?
