Breer: TheMMQB 8/21 Jets Info

Being at Jets training camp was a reminder of one common thread between hyped teams that don’t make it. And that’s not saying the Jets won’t make it in 2023. But if there’s one thing that could take the team down, it’s the state of the offensive line.

Consider …

The team’s left tackle, Duane Brown, is coming back from surgery to repair two tears in his rotator cuff (somehow he played through that last year), and will turn 38 this month. He hasn’t practiced—he has a checkup this week, and the expectation is he’ll be cleared by the doctors. If Brown is who he was last year, great. But with a player that age, there are always fair questions on whether he can make it through an NFL season.

• The right tackle right now is probably Mekhi Becton. He’s been better this summer in just about every way. But how reliable he’ll be, based on his history, is still an open question. And if Becton doesn’t seize and hang on to the job, the Jets would have to turn to 2022 fourth-rounder Max Mitchell, journeyman Billy Turner or move Ali Vera-Tucker from guard.

• Connor McGovern is likely to be the Week 1 starter at center, but the idea rookie Joe Tippman beats him out at some point isn’t out of the question. And if Tippman doesn’t, he could play guard instead, should the Jets have to move Vera-Tucker.

As you can see, there are a lot of ifs there. So while everyone focuses on Aaron Rodgers and the coaching staff and whatever else HBO’s Hard Knocks presents Tuesdays, the Jets know this is the one thing that has to come together for them before the Sept. 11 opener against the Bills. They’re aware, of course, what problems in that area did to the Bengals and Chiefs in the Super Bowl, and how it’s sunk a lot of other contenders in recent years way before then.

The Jets, by the way, aren’t alone. The Chiefs, Bengals, Steelers, Patriots and Titans are among the teams in the AFC undergoing turnover at tackle, and need things to fall into place the right way there. You could argue every team in the Jets’ division has the offensive line as its swing factor for 2023. Which makes this the sort of hidden story line that promises to get bigger when the games start to count in a couple of weeks

Uh, why wouldn't they want him to play the position he actually might play in the regular season (RT)?

So youre saying he cant play a quarter at LT , in a preseason game , especially the guy projected to play LT  has been hurt all offseason  , and hes 38 years old . By the way has anybody even seen him?

Brown coming back this week coupled with Becton's resurgence could mean that these OL problems are starting to go away and the final configuration is falling into place. Now can they stay on the field is the other issue and time will tell.

The idea of Tippman cracking the starting lineup at guard is intriguing. I do think he's shown out enough to be a starter but CMG is an average to above average safe presence at the position. Starting at RG and pushing AVT to RT if Becton comes apart could work really well.

Who?  Brown?  Yeah he's been on the sideline for each preseason game

Pretty sure Brown could have participated in camp but they've had an agreement to give him until this week to rest up.  Line of brown, lake, mcg, AVT, Becton will be pretty damn good.  Just need them to start building continuity this week.

Run right!

If we can't gain at least 1 hard positive yard every single time we run right, I will be very disappointed.  I expect it to be like the Eagles' QB sneak play.  Pretty much a guaranteed yard when you need it.  Of course, I expect a whole lot more on most plays, but having that tool in our belt would be really nice.

Lol. Jets might have issues on the OL. As well as many other teams. Stay tuned to see if they actually happen.

Reporting is such a lazy joke.  I hope someone they hate again gains a prominent role so they all have to go back to doing real work instead of fluff pieces and regurgitated news from other sources copied and pasted.

Why wouldnt they move Becton to LT for the Giants game , I mean he was drafted as a LT .

They believe Brown will be the LT. Can't say I am mad about it, Becton getting snaps at RT makes the online pretty good if Brown \ Becton both start.

If Tippman is going to be the starting C, he needs as many reps with Rodgers as possible.

Center-QB exchange and Rodgers’ cadence are not things you can afford to not have down pat heading into week 1.

Tippman is not going to be the starting center.

Brown has about three weeks to get ready. He’s going to be paired with Tomlinson on the left side they should both have a good idea how they will play on that side. Not to mention that McGovern is probably the center. The right side is mostly new. No problem with avt but he’s probably going to be paired with becton.  The only real issue I see is that the starting oline hasn’t been practicing together much.  Three weeks should be enough unless Hackett changed the protection schemes a lot from milfy. And it looks like the backup guys like Mitchell, tippman, et al have been getting a lot of work in camp so depth may not be much of an issue.

Another half assed reference to HKs.  Just hates some that a NY team is getting the pub, even a team that was against the coverage.

He hasn’t been hurt, he’s rehabbing.  Short for they’re giving him time off, Gearing up to opening day.  Just like they did with Becton and his snap counts in the PS.  At 38 he’s still a very good LT
