I guess coming back from dead is a bigger story than coming back from a torn ligament, even if the recovery process was shorter and probably less intensive.  If anything, they would look bad not celebrating the incredible story.

I think the Buffalo Bill that died on the field last season already has comeback player of the year sewed up.  All he has to do is just show up in uniform.

I don't think it's harsh.  It's the reality.  He died on the field.  It's incredible that he survived and will be able to continue playing football.  Sorry that you found it harsh.
