I think Gipson has had an inside track to one of those spots due to his return abilities. Figure that Hardman’s role in the offense just increased, so having someone else handling returns would probably be wise. Problem is that leaves them three WRs 5’10” or under. I could see Brownlee making the first cut, but meeting the Turk after the Jets pick a WR from the rest of the league’s cuts.

I think Irvin Charles is the most Davis-like, so he possibly has the inside track at the #5 spot.  He has a bit of seasoning from his year on the PS, has great size, and can be a contributor on special teams.

If the Jets keep 6 on the initial 53 - not a slam dunk - then I could see Gipson getting the nod for his return ability.  But I'm not sure the Jets keep 6 on the 53.  They could well keep 5 and pack the PS with additional WRs.

if we are trying to replace Davis with a tall pass-catcher who blocks well, wouldn't just keeping the 4th TE make sense?  Assuming one of them (Yeboah or Kuntz) can more or less do that job?

I’ve been expecting them to keep four TEs, anyway. Before Davis retired, the Jets were going to run a lot of 12 & 21 personnel. Even with Rodgers, they were always going to focus on running the football.

Kuntz is an intriguing idea in the RPO

Malik Taylor will be WR5. He wouldn't necessarily have been WR6 - WR5 is a guy you want to be able to play this year is an emergency, WR6 is a guy you are keeping on the roster because you think he has long-term upside and don't want to expose him to waivers (if you're using WR6 that means you've hit an injury apocalypse and your season is screwed anyway), and he can contribute on specials in the interim. Taylor's a better fit for 5 than Brownlee and Gipson, but not for 6.

Would Gipson, Brownlee, or Charles be more likely to be claimed by another team if waived?  Would any of them be claimed?

Charles is by far the least likely - he's bounced on and off the Jets' practice squad repeatedly over the last few years without issue. Brownlee and Gipson are interesting cases; Brownlee is more likely to be claimed on the "long term upside" theory and Gipson more likely to be claimed on the "we can immediately use him as a returner" theory. So both are risks, and it's probably impossible to say which is a bigger risk ex ante

Without reading replies, I'm sure many will cite Brownlee's emergence or Gibson's ST/big play potential...

Neither are enough. We've already got an oft-injured WR3 vet (Lazard), a speed/gadget guy who's never been week-to-week reliable (Hardman), and Cobb who is security blanket at best.

Davis retiring and Lazard successfully injuring himself again -- we need a legit WR1-2 to pair with Wilson... this team is built to go the distance. Not fcking around and relying on Brownlee when Lazard & Cobb are on empty tanks

FA options

  • Julio Jones
  • Sammy Watkins
  • Jeff Smith 😆
  • Rashard Higgins

Mostly terrible but all better than Brownlee

Trade targets

  • Mike Evans
  • Tyler Boyd
  • Keenan Allen
  • Van Jefferson
  • Michael Gallup

Yes please.

Watkins has never had the chance to play with a QB as good as Rodgers, can't imagine what he'd do if he had a decent QB throwing to him, unlike the stiffs he played with from 2018-22 🙄

He played with Mahomes, not as good as Rodgers but in the same ballpark.

He literally played with Rodgers last season and with Mahomes previous with Lamar in between. He's only played with good QBs in the last 5 years

fairly certain he was making a joke about why on earth would we consider Watkins.

Still, don't trust Brownlee

Adam Sandler Yes GIF

Anyway, re Brownlee - we absolutely cannot trust him to be a contributor this year. If he has a roster spot, it's because we see long term upside and don't think we can sneak him through to the PSquad.

If any of the current young guys make the roster as a "we need another WR in case of emergency" it'll be Malik Taylor, who has experience with Rodgers and would be a decent (not good, but not horrible) emergency fill-in in case of short-term injury
