If you saw that game, you’ll never forget it.

One I don’t remember as well, but I kind of think happened was a similar shootout with John Hadl and the Chargers? (the Lamonica/ Raider games never disappointed either)

There hasn't been a similar performance from Hadl, Lamonica, Mahomes, Rodgers,

Brady, Manning, Montana, Elway or Marino, that Joe Willie put on the field that

memorable day

This is what Joe could do when his knees were still relatively health.  I did see the game on TV. Don’t remember what the blackout situation was then.  I do remember that for the AFL championship game that preceded the Super Bowl, I organized a trip for my fraternity to go to a motel in Connecticut to watch the game because of the blackout rule .  You had to go somewhere 75 miles away.  You might say that times have changed slightly, LOL
Joe was freaking awesome. If anyone wants to quibble about the completion percentages in those days, keep in mind that the defense was allowed to beat the crap out of the qbs then, and the defensive backs could hit the receivers all the way down the field.
One last thing about those good old days.  I had season tickets at Shea Stadium: It was a nightmare in cold weather, as the wind whipped through it mercilessly.

For some reason I didn't get this game on TV - maybe a blackout back then - but I remember listening to it on the radio - live - and I think it was Marty Glickman. Greatest game I never saw but heard.

The game was not blacked out in the NYC area because it was in Baltimore.  I remember watching that game.  In fact, I'll never forget it.  It was an unbelievable performance by Namath.  I remember being frustrated by the Jets defense inability to stop the Colts.  While Namath was connecting on bomb after bomb late in the game, I remember Unitas marching the Colts down the field in smaller, time consuming drives and keeping the game close.

Having Unitas in the threads title is a fu*ckin joke,

he was a passenger. Broadway's passing performance

was the best single game in the history of the NFL.

496 yds and 6tds on 15 completions has never been closed

to being matched

Johnny U had a great game too were sack yards lost subtracted from the passing yardage back then b/c i thought he had 396 yards?

Living in NJ I watched it live on NBC since it was played in old Memorial Stadium. That blackout rule really used to suck. Both AFC Championship games weren't even on TV Jets and Raiders Dec 1968 and then the next year Dec 20 1969 to this day I still have never seen the AFCCG vs KC when the Jets lost 13-6.  Joe Namath threw 3 INTs was 14-40 and a QBR of 17.6! Turn the ball over 4 times in a big game like that and there's no way you win. Chiefs had none.

I found a site yesterday that some guy has up on YouTube that has quite a few games (including the old commercials) and I watched a few. You guys wouldn't believe the stuff that wasn't called back then , late hits out of bounds, shots to the head, Willie Brown "blocking" Eddie Bell and intercepting a Namath pass in the EZ at which time Joe throws his helmut on the ground and not getting called. I'm gonna find it some of the old guys will get a kick out of these...like I did. There's a few old Jets games https://www.youtube.com/@davevolskysbackdoor5673/playlists

Great post.  I hated Willie Brown because he was great against us, and everyone else. I have always felt that he was the best defensive back of all time. Of course, we will never know how he would have fared with the current rules.
This discussion also reminds me that Ben Davidson broke Namath’s jaw with a late hit. Dirtiest player ever. I hated those effin Raiders.

One of my favorite Broadway Joe memories! I realize most of the board never watched this game (because they were either too young or not born yet), my dream is for AR to have a game anywhere close to this one for us!

agree and I had the pleasure of watching this game with my buddies and we couldn't believe it... after the game one of the D players commented that they were tired because JOe was scoring so much and so fast...

It wasn't Ben Davidson. It was Ike Lassiter. But I agree Raders are the true "most hated" rival.

If Davidson wasn’t the one who broke Joe’s jaw, there were more than enough dirty plays by Davidson to make me hate him.   Didn’t like the owner either.

From John Madden:

``I'll tell you something about Namath,' Madden said. ``You read all the stuff about Broadway Joe and you think he was a pretty boy, but he didn't play like a pretty boy. He was one tough S.O.B.

``All my years in football, only once did I go to the other team's locker room to shake a player's hand and it was Namath. We knocked the hell out of him one day and he just kept getting up, throwing touchdown passes.

``After the game, I went in and shook his hand. I said, 'You're a helluva man,' and I meant it.'

this game really was significant in NFL history I think as to the passing yards. I remember talking with my dad about it the next day and he was floored by Joe's performance. ftr my dad was never a big football guy

I mean 496 yards and 6 TDs on only 15 completions!
