Mike Evans and Bucs hit snag

I've wanted to do something else at WR most this offseason and have mentioned Evans several times. So obviously I'm for this.

But have to be careful with this. He wants one last pay day for multiple years, he's 30 now and has battled some injuries.

He has been a team 1st guy and has moved his money around so TB can try and win SBs. But that's lead now to him getting like 23mill this year bc he's restructured so much the last couple years. That this year they finally have to pay him all that money.

I'd offer a mid round pick and sign him to a deal through next season. That's how long we pretty much know we'll for sure have AR. So it's giving Evans that same opportunity he has had for the last few years with Brady now with us. Not really interested in going longer than this year and next year. Not a lot of WRs his size are still playing at a high level at 32-33 years old.

You can only make this work for a couple of years while Garrett Wilson is on his rookie deal.  You can't pay two WR's mega dollars, especially one on the wrong side of 30.

Well we’re in luck then:  We’d only really be looking to acquire him primarily for the next couple years!

He wants Kupp’s extension deal for himself, so that’d be 3 more guaranteed seasons, plus part of a 4th if he gets ~$75MM fully guaranteed:

2023 $13MM (existing contract, becomes guaranteed with an extension). Likely will have the salary number adjusted, but that dollar amount will still be guaranteed however that’s done.

2024-26 (3 year Kupp-like extension) depends on how much salary/pay is structured per season, but it’d be another $60-65MM fully guaranteed in the end. Barring unusual front loading nobody does, that’ll take at least several million into 2026 (contract year 4) when he’ll be 33. Probably a lot more than that in reality, if/when an eventual restructure is done 1-2 years in that lowers the base salary by converting it to bonus that moves half or most of it to dummy/void years tracked onto the end.

Other than the Rodgers trade, where the Jets appeared to give up too much in draft picks to pick up a highly paid QB, JD has been pretty restrained with his moves.  That is reflected in the fact that the Jets still have so much cap space left for a team supposedly “going for it.”

But you can even say the Rodgers trade was a better deal now because of what Rodgers agreed to be paid.

In most but not necessarily all case, teams competing for a Super Bowl have to “mortgage their future” for the missing pieces.   I think the Jets need to do that, and Mike Evans could be that piece.

But he is 10 years in.  I would only pay him for 2 years, spread over 3-4.

Would be the cherry on top of the sundae.

No way I would give up a 3rd round pick. 5th round maybe, prefer a player, but all the $ he wants.

They won’t take a 5th rounder alone. Wonder if Zach Wilson has any appeal to them given their qb situation. Not like they are going to be playing for anything.
