Is tonight a must win?

Was watching a Jets show last night and they mentioned that this game is a must win. At first I scoffed, but the more I listened, the more I see their point.

Lose tonight, and we are staring the possibility 2-4 in the face with Dallas (who looked incredible last night), then KC, and finally Philly upcoming.

Not that we are incapable of beating any of those teams, but we would certainly be the easy underdog.

Very tough opening stretch to the season.

IMO "must-wins" only apply when competing for a playoff spot near the end of the year or seeding is involved.  Maybe in baseball or hockey when you're down 0-2 in a best of 7.  Other than that, nah it's not a must win.  It's an extremely important game, and it'll probably tell us a lot about what type of team this is going to be this year, but it's not a must win.  As many have said, we could go into the bye at 3-3 and still win the division.  Winning opening night would be huge, but we can very easily survive even if we lose.

Nope.  A must win means the season is over if you do not win the game.

That's one definition.

But it can also mean that without that win, the road becomes much more difficult.

For example: If it's late in the season and a win increases playoff odds to 50% and a loss reduces them to 1% ... is it a must win? Or is it not a must win, just because there is that tiny, itty-bitty, 1% chance? I think most people would agree that is a must win.

Every game is must win. To asset otherwise is terrible leadership. I hope nobody in the building is even asking this question.

That is like saying the Bengals season is over.  Whacky things happen week 1.  I would not be surprised to see the Giants and Bengals bounce back and have real nice weeks.

If the Bengals are going to win the SB they might well need a 1 seed to do it.  Getting a 1 seed after a divisional loss becomes much harder.

Fight for the Week 1 right to lose with dignity, eh?

No.

The term "must win" has a specific meaning and people misuse it every year week one. It's stupid AF and annoys the piss out of me.

It's a very important game in a season we hope to compete for a SB. Could be the difference between 1 seed or not, division winner or not, playoffs or not. We'll all be miserable if we lose and we'll be behind in the division.

Are we eliminated or even close to eliminated from contention of anything if we lose? No. We are not.

There are no week 1 must win games. Ever. Asking the question is stupid. Thinking it is a must win is even more stupid. If you believe this is even a valid question you need to learn what "must win" means.

Mathematically no, obviously

But realistically speaking, it is pretty close to must-win

I mean look at the early schedule

Teams that dig themselves a hole early (e.g. 2-4 start), typically don’t make the playoffs, much less win division titles

Plus it’s a divisional opponent, so those games are obviously more important
