This feels like a temporary move, so they can keep the reserve kicker around on the PS this week just in case Zuerlein can't go.

Smart is a veteran (probably not subject to waivers, though I'm not certain), so there could be a handshake deal to bring him back once Zuerlein in healthy and the reserve kicker is no longer needed.
