Was the NFL always this bad?

Recommended Posts

There are just way too many judgement calls that decide games.  I’m thinking it ge late hot in the bengals in the afc championship.  The eagles Bs hold in the SB.  It happens every week in the season.  Forget all the roughing the passersI just don’t remember the reds being this much part of the game.  It really hurts  the sport in my opinion.  Was it always this bad?  I don’t remember this growing up

For a while now, yes, at least to my eye. It's partly why I've given up watching non-Jets games the last couple seasons, but it's been pretty much on brand for the last ten years or so, at least.

And don't let people fool you. Tonight had nothing to do with Taylor Swift, that narrative is just weird. This is all stuff we should be used to by now, as Jets fans. Find an alternate world where Taylor Swift isn't dating Kelce, and those bad calls still probably happen. It's just the way the NFL is.

Only thing that maybe changes it is if Aaron Rodgers were playing and we have a favored QB for once. Maybe.

The refs were less of an issue when their job didn’t include protecting players.  Lots of judgement was added.

Hate that incidental holding on a defensive player is an automatic 1st down.   How about a spot 10 yard penalty like offensive holding.  No automatic 1st down.

I call it the Brady Effect.

It's the Roger Goodell Effect. I don't remember the calls being this slanted or blatant in the 80s and 90s. They didn't have credibility issues back then.

He's turned the league into boxing. It's corrupt.

Now that gambling is officially sanctioned by the nfl, there is an obvious correlation between that and the rise of horrible game affecting officiating. It has really spoiled football for me, I’m watching a lot less and wouldn’t let myself get emotionally invested last night. The amazing part is that they’re able to keep the officials silent. It’s rare to hear a callout like Sauce’s and finally Saleh reacting at the end

Rightly or wrongly, teams with less talent get called for more penalties. It is a fact of life in the NFL Up until the late 90s though, the QB protection racket wasn't really in effect. It all started with Brady getting hit low and all of a sudden there was a rule passed (even though the Steelers put Carson Palmer out of a playoff game with a low cheap shot... guess Palmer wasn't good enough). Now, if you have a star QB, your OL can do pretty much anything.

Yes, these were horrible calls. But, as usual, the vaunted Jets defense just can't come up with a stop when they need one. Just like the end of the Buffalo game, and so many others over the years, they gave up too many ridiculous plays in that last drive. You simply cannot allow a QB to run for a first down when it's 3rd and 25. Where is the pressure in that situation? You've got to make him get rid of the ball early, but they never do.

Yes the officiating is horrible. It is affecting the watchability of the games, definitely. But it's not the reason the Jets lost.

It you declare Angel Hernandez a statistical outlier, NFL Refs have always been the worst officials out of the four main professional sports leagues.

NHL refs continue to be the standard other official should wish to attain. NBA refs are not too bad as well. MLB umpires outside the couple asswipes that make the game about them aren't terrible.

NFL Refs have been and will always be the worst.

I think the proof it was this bad is the existence of replay.  Pretty sure it came to the NFL first before it came to the other major sports.  Amazingly, the refereeing still stinks.

I think it's a well known "secret" that the NHL used to make calls to increase drama.  (e.g. If a team was trailing, they would get PP's to try to make the game more exciting).  I think that has changed in recent years and now they make more legit calls.

You're not wrong. The "Make Up" Call in the NHL was totally real.  So was putting their whistle away in a close game.

It's been this way for a while. Mahomes is clearly the heir apparent to the Brady treatment.

The integrity of the game takes a back seat to the latest trends that bring in casual fan dollars.

If you really care about the sport of football, the NFL will disappoint you every time. This is a league for them, not us.

This is no different than the nfl helping Brady.  The nfl gave the chiefs the super bowl last year when the eagles deserved it.  Maybe the game is officiated differently with rodgers.
