Look, Zach Wilson played well for Zach Wilson but this stat says more about the defense. Mahomes was held to the 3rd lowest QB rating of his career.

QBs face the opposing defense, not each other.

Yes. Lost in the fact that Zach actually had a competent game at QB is the fact that the defense stifled the defending champs after making adjustments down 17-0. Mahomes looked frustrated at times in the 2nd half before the final drive

So... this was the best Defense Mahomes has ever faced? Wilson was bad??

Mahomes sucks?

Wilson played good for Zach Wilson. He helped lead the offense to 18 points which is 5 points less than the league average over the past few years. People are so used to Zach Wilson being dysfunctional that when he suddenly shows up looking like an NFL QB some are bamboozled into believing he had some sort of great game. He played good! I'm happy to see it and hope he continues to build on it.

The Jets defense stifled Mahomes better than most have over the course of his career. It was one game so I wouldn't make any grandiose statements like "the best defense Mahomes ever faced".

The combination of the defense stifling Mahomes and Zach playing like an NFL QB for a day are what I would credit this stat with. Stifling Mahomes is the more difficult accomplishment, obviously. To prove this, if you go look at all the opposing QB stat lines over Mahomes career I'll bet there are many that are as good or better than what Zach did on Sunday.

It's deceiving and it's not.  It's not like Mahomes hasn't played against other really good defenses before.

What's more amazing to me is that 99% of the NFL world, probably many of his coaches and teammates, expected him to fail in epic proportions.  So for him to put on that type of performance in that situation in front of the crowd that was watching was an amazing accomplishment -- even for a moment.

My hope is that moment translates to the coaches letting him play a lot more freely and his teammates fighting for him.  I don't trust Saleh but I do trust Rodgers and prays he remains influential in the building, at least when it comes to running an offense.

Good post. Why?

I agree with every single word you just wrote.

1. Jets D held Mahomes mostly in check as a passer and forced several turnovers, which murders QBR.

2. Zach had the best statistical game of his career and his only turnover was a fumble, backbreaker tho it was, which doesn't murder QBR.

3. Chiefs ran all over our D, mitigating the need for Mahomes to pass a ton.

The Zach "best game" part was certainly unexpected, but I don't think any of this is "insane", and I don't think it carries that much greater or broader meaning.

Any given Sunday.

This stat means nothing.  Mahomes had a bad game, Zach had a good game.  Nothing more.

No, Mahomes didn’t have a bad game, Zach just happened to play better

Boy if Zach can turn out to be a serviceable to good starting NFL QB that would make a mind-boggling difference to this franchise. I don't take much from one game, Mahomey could have been off a bit, but still, that is a solid accomplishment. Have to see more from "the new" Zach. If he goes out to Denver and reverts to the old Zach, then the KC game is meaningless in the grand scheme, but if he manages to actually have turned the corner and puts together some solid, turn over free starts in the coming weeks, we are on to something. I am totally rooting for Zach. We deserve this kind of break already.

I don't even mind a turnover.  I want just want to see more drives like the start of the 3rd quarter.  That 1 drive included 4 of his top 5 throws in his short NFL career.

Patty was awful by his standards but found a way to win w-his legs. He’s a winner. That’s the difference.

Brooks Bollinger, against the Dolphins in the middle of Miami's 6-game win streak.

Thrilled with the improvement, especially with the expected blowout-humiliation based on how awful things were previously, but - like the far less-talented Bollinger - let's see him do it again. And again. And again.

Bollinger played in a real college football conference. 😉

I would call 60% completion percentage, below average yardage, 0 TD passes and 2 INTs a bad game.

Yeah for real Mahomes looked awful, throwing off his back foot all night right into coverage. Our defense really ****s with these elite AFC QBs.

Which will be awesome for us if Zach keeps playing like he did. Once teams start respecting his play the running game will get better, and the potential of the Jets skyrockets.

Of course it was a bad passing game.  Our D kept him in check quite well for his being the best QB in the NFL or close enough to it.

They just couldn't stop the run, couldn't make vital stops when needed (like after Zach's fumble), and couldn't shut the Chiefs down late on several 3rd and 20+ spots.  The Chiefs ground game really killed us.
