Young OL

Recommended Posts

Agreed. We see the difference in ZW when he is protected, he actually goes through his progressions and has been able to find and hit open receivers. Still missing a downfield passing game, but I think that is on the CS. If we can ever develop a downfield passing game, watch out. They made some adjustments in the 3rd quarter and we moved the ball at will, but as usual, chickened out in the RZ settling for 3's. Hoping AVT only has a sprained calf and will be back for the Giants game.

The OL mostly looked ok which was a relief with Mitchell coming in on the right and losing AVT.

You've got to judge this by what they were asked to do. Denver has one of the worst, or maybe the worst, defense in the league. A serviceable OL should not struggle against a terrible defense. Hopefully this win will give them confidence to play well next weekend.

The OL was part of the ridiculous amount of penalties the team racked up, which isn't great.

Rewatched the game this morning and focused on the OL.

I was expecting to be disappointed but was not at all, especially with the young OL.

Max Mitchell was really good I thought, after a few shaky pass pro reps in his first series or two.  He had a great combo block springing Hall on the long TD.  Got to the 2nd level, sealed the LB and Hall was loose.  Good in pass pro after the initial shaky few reps.

Joe Tippmann is just really good.  Not a lot of context to add.  He’s a damn good player already.  Looks to be a big hit for JD.

Last but not least, Becton was borderline dominant. He got attributed a sack in the first half, but I’m not sure that’s really on him.  It may have been, but looked like a miscommunication.  Conklin was in-line to Becton’s left, stayed in for the initial block and pushed him outside/upfield.  Becton immediately was helping LG.  Conklin released and Becton “checked” a moment later.  He was either suppose to be helping Conklin or passing off from Conklin, but there is no way he would have gotten to the guy. Guy was way to deep and wide for any LT to be able to cut him off in that sequence.

Anyway, outside of that play, he was pretty damn stout.  Pass pro looked good against a much quicker DE and was absolutely moving people in the run game.  He played really well.

What did you see from McGovern and LT?

I think the OL is in good shape. Not playing them together much in the preseason and pinning hopes on Duane Brown were obviously coaching staff mistakes and had the current lineup with AVT played together from the start of camp, I think the first few games would have looked different, but they seem to be rounding into shape now (much like last year when it took a few games for them to start playing well).

At least 3 of his incompletes were because he put too much zip on the ball.  For the most part though his throws have had better touch this year then ever before.  I think the extra zip comes when he feels pressure and brain farts.  I'll take it.

I didn’t focus much on them, to be honest.  At this point they feel like they are serviceable yet nothing special.  I think McGovern is better than Tomlinson.  Tomlinson seems to be pretty good in the run game.  Pretty poor in pass protection.

It was pretty cool to see Becton come back into the game, and his first play he destroys a LB at the 2nd level springing Breece for like 14 yards.

I think we've finally got the makings of something with this current OL core.  If Becton stays on the field he absolutely needs to be brought back.  Tippmann looks like the real deal.  AVT is AVT, hopefully he'll be back soon.  Mitchell holding down the fort and looking good in the process will go a long way towards him earning a shot at the starting lineup at some point.

Philly is going to be a big test.  I'm much more confident now though than I would have been week 2 with Brown in there.

Lots of things to like on the OL and they’re only going to get better as they gel and Breece gets healthier. An upgrade at C feels necessary in the off-season but for the first time in a long time it seems like the Jets could be set at they other 4 spots on the OL
