Costello pens article (finally) calling Jets defense "overhyped"

Recommended Posts

I think this is a good thing.  They ARE a bit overhyped, and maybe this will light some fires.

Maybe someone can post the full article.  I don't subscribe to the Post (lol Lord have mercy on those of you that do)

I appreciate the effort of not using PFF but the stats you are showing are for tackles and not missed tackles.

Our defense is really good. I mean I don't recall any Rex-like proclamations from the team they were going to be the '85 Bears or '86 Giants reincarnated.

Also, news flash....in today's game no defense is ever going to be so dominant again. You need a defense that can create turnovers, especially in big moments. This defense can do that.

Now, I think this upcoming game is a good opportunity for people like Quinnen William. Who got his big contract and wants to be known as the best interior DLineman in the game. I love Q and I think he's a class act, a hard worker, and a great teammate.

It's also a good spot for Sauce to regain some of that 2022 shine that is wearing off a little bit. He appropriately got the accolades, press, and hype, but let's see this weekend brother. That's a great receiver corp in Philly. Let's see some impact plays.

However, these kinds of games are where superstars show up and excel. I'd really like to see Q and Sauce show up in a big way.

I've always felt like most tackles indicative of a bad defense that can not get off the field. Shouldn't the best defense have the least amount of tackles because they face the fewest amount of offensive plays?

3rd down percentage is something I look at, and the Jets are at 45.8%, the Eagles are just as bad at 45.5%.

The Jets have given up 104 1st downs this year, with 40 are rushing 1st downs. That's 28th in the league. The Browns have given up 12.

It’s a really good defense and the strength of the team.

I don’t care that it’s not the 85 Bears - which only became a thing because of one dumb, offhand remark by DJ Reed who basically only said he thought they had the potential to be as good as that defense

I would also add that this defense matches up particularly well with elite QBs/passing offenses. It would really be nice to give them a shot in the playoffs

It doesn't matter. The defense SHOULD be good enough. Only once have they allowed more than 23 points in a game, which I'm pretty sure is the average in the NFL. And a lot of this is due to slow starts.

Either way, if the defense is allowing less than 23 points per game, the offense should be scoring at least that much. Is that too much to ask of? For an average offense?

It isn't going to matter how good the defense is if the offense can't even score 23 points in a game (Which I don't think they have yet).

So, to my memory, that headline is dishonest.

I don't remember him saying they will be as good or better than the 85 Bears. I believe his exact words were that the Jets "can be historical"

He was basically saying they have the potential to be as good as any defense. I don't think he predicted they would be better than the 85 Bears.

It was a dumb thing to say in public, but was also overblown

Inept is too strong of a word.  This offense has shown improvement the past two weeks, particularly against KC, and did enough (but not as much as they should have) against Denver.

When last year's backup QB (Mike White) stepped in and played like Wilson did the past couple weeks people started changing their avatars to pictures of him.

With no Aaron Rodgers, Breece Hall on a "pitch count" the first 4 games, losing Brown and now AVT, I can say I'm actually glass-half-full with this offense at the moment.  But that's just me.

i think you better use PFR. it says Jets have 10 INTs and Arizona has 18. dude nobody in the NFL has more that 8.

If the defense would show up in the first half they'd be awesome. They've been close to dominant in the second half after adjusting to what the opposing offense was doing. As it is they're certainly over hyped when compared with the 85 bears, which will never be challenged again.

good point.

i think other teams are throwing us off in the early game. but the halftime adjustments have been really good.

got to give credit to Saleh and Ulrich .

I do think there's probably something to be said for the heavy DL rotation.

Second half - OL is getting tired, Dline is fresh.

I agree with you.

I think the issue for Zach is that this is year 3, not year 1. If we saw back to back 70% completion percentage games with over 7 yards/attempt in the second one at the end of his rookie year, the conversation would have been very different.

It feels like too little too late to a lot of people

27th overall in 3rd down defense.

Not good enough but also not the best stat for their style of defense. They bend but don't break quite a bit.

They have given up one second half touchdown this year.

The biggest issue is not starting these games fast enough
