Increased muscle mass from anabolic steroid use is one factor in tendon injuries.

Tendons do not increase in strength and size in proportion to the large gain in muscle mass.

Muscles are attached to bone via tendons.

When the muscle exceeds the tendons capacity they can rupture when the muscle rapidly contacts.

All the more reason to take all precautions to protect your body. NFL players are stronger and faster than ever. Putting ever more  pressure on their muscles and tendons.

Of course stretching and keeping warm can only do so much, when players basically experience repeated low-speed car crashes on Sundays. But again all the more reason to control for all variables. And the likelihood of Achilles and other injuries increases when  muscles and tendons aren’t kept loose and warm. Something anyone who’s played competitive sports knows. Hospital for Special Surgery also says as much:

Achilles tendon ruptures are most often caused by sudden, strenuous athletic activity that was not preceded by proper stretching
