Non-Jets: Is Sam Howell the Real Deal, or no?

Commanders 5th round pick Howell, in his 2nd year, but first as a starter (started one game to end last year) put up some hellatious numbers yesterday in a shootout vs. the Eagles (p.s. the Der's D may be one of the biggest disappointment units in the NFL this year).

Given all of our strident disagreement over Zach Wilson, I'd be curious what people here think of Howell at this point.  His game vs. Buffalo was atrocious (4 INT's, unproductive) and his showing vs. the Giants not great either, but otherwise he's on pace for a 4,200 yard, close to 30 TD season this year, and has 4 INT's over his other 7 games in 2023.

Well, he's also on pace to blow away the NFL record in sacks taken too, lol.

His numbers this year:

As much as Purdy is the real deal... They will never be top 10 QBs but they are serviceable and you can win with them...

He has potential, maybe. As for the sacks, I hear from some that sacks or pressure shouldn't really affect a QB.

Howell was considered to be a first round pick (maybe even top 5) entering his last year.

He put up stinker numbers without his All-ACC rb tandem and had a horrible year.

The talent is there, but ultimately I think his height will limit and eventually expose him once the league gets enough film.

He’s no ZW, but I think the Commanders are happy to have him.

It should be painfully obvious by now that philosophically, unless you’re staring at a slam dunk prospect like Luck or Manning, you trade out a top-3 pick for the proverbial king’s ransom and don’t look back.

What the 9ers did was even worse, moving up to #3 for Lance.

And you should draft a QB every year because you just never know.

Howell where he was taken presented extreme value.

He played Philly tough twice and the fact that he looked better against the 2nd time is a good sign. I haven't watched him much, but this is the kind of kid I like to look to develop.  You often can't sit a top of the drop QB, without ruining his mystique.  Guys like this or Mike White?  You can mold them into whatever.  I would generally always be looking for one of these or a Trey Lance reclamation project type.

young and a bit raw but he has the tools and is a tough kid

watched him at nc and he can play at this level.

Here is a trade that will cause controversy but Qw for Howell straight up

HHAHAHAHAHA.  An up and coming rising star qb for a 96 million dollar contract who cant get a sack or make a game changing play?  The commanders would laugh at this.

He was brutal against the Giants. or maybe the Giants defense is not that bad.

Picked Tua twice

Held Buffalo in check most of the game

Beat up on the Commanders

Don't know. too early to say.

Qw is good and I was not dismissing his talent with the suggestion

The trade would never happen but if Howell develops this year into a favorable franchise qb, it would take that level of trade to get him

You can’t win a SB with Brock Purdy.  Never could.  Was exposed some this week and will only get exposed more.

Well, they would laugh......but NOT because of QW.

They already have four first rounders starting on the D-Line, all of whom they see as being as good as QW.

And they already know they cannot afford all 4 as it is.

The trade would not happen cause not 1 team would take on a player who makes 96 million dollars who cant sack the qb or make game changing plays.  7 games in this is one of the worst contracts in the league.

Heard a report yesterday morning that young and sweat are most likely gone

seemed suprising to me but I am not up on their roster

Add Howell to the list of first year/late rounder/journeyman QBS that are far better than the current starting QB of the NYJ...

Purdy

Heinecken

Young

Stroud

Mayfield

Goff

Wentz

Siemien

Geno

Garropopololpo

Dobbs

Bagent (?)

PJ Walker

Cooper Rush

Bridgewater

My Quite

Bailey Zappe

Drew Locke

Will Levis

Brissette

Davis Mills

Case Kennum

I would take any of the above over what the Jets are currently trotting onto the field...
