They are all handicapped by the owner that turns off high achievers with options.

parsing together rosters with free agents that don’t mind coming here as long as the jets outbid everyone.  No tradition of winning or expectations for winning.  No pressure to win. Think of how many guys are here for a few years and leave. This guy used the incompetent owner helpline from the NFL, a search firm and just took gases word for it.

Just being hired by the owner gives them a very low chance of succeeding. He doesnt make very good hires, ever

Imo as far as incompetence goes idzick has to take the cake. He came in with rough circumstances due to cap space issues which to his credit he did fix. The problem is he sabotaged himself because he didn't want rex Ryan as his head coach and he took a team that was in recent back to back AFC championship games destroyed it in a way that set us back for years. As far as joe Douglas he has had some good draft picks some bad ones. Some decent free agents pickups particular udfa players and some big names bad ones id say he is mediocre.

I fat fingered the wrong one.  I meant Mac, just for the sheer dead cap space he left the team

That being said, look at how Joe D made these contracts, not just Rodgers.  A Lot of dead cap space in the future.

Also, honorable mention to pretty much all the GMs of the 70s

Mike Tannenbaum, I feel was the worst GM because he put them in a huge hole that Douglas is trying to pull out of hole. He drafted horribly and he let Rex Ryan make the picks. In his final year as GM the team had a lousy oline, no WRs or TE, the secondary was a complete mess and the dline was lousy. Tannenbaum left this team in over the salary cap. Remember Tannenbaum was known more as a Capologist not a player personnel guy.

After Tannenbaum came Idzik who didn't fair better at all. He was another Capologist with zero player personnel experience. He was the one that drafted QB Geno Smith and thought he got the second coming of Russel Wilson. The only thing good he did was got the team under the salary cap but selecting players wasn't his forte.

Next up was McCagnan who was horrible at selecting players in the draft and free agents. The team was terrible and couldn't draft properly or address the head coaching problem. One of the things that made me laugh till this day is owner Woody Johnson having him rebuild this team but stay competitive. Woody's ridiculous request made me laugh because it's an impossible act to do and in the end he was fired by head coach Adam Gase.

In came Joe Douglas who was hired by Gase the head coach. Douglas came in and cleaned house all the bad contracts the team had were either traded or cut in his first year. After doing all that he began to actually rebuild the team through the draft that none of his predecessors could do while as GM. Look at the team with the exception of QB, this team is far better than it was with Tannenbaum. Remember the teams fall started with Tannenbaum and Douglas has rebuilt this team up.

The one thing that sure is upsetting is the meddling of owner Woody Johnson. He was involved in the trade for QB Brett Favre and Tim Tebow. He was persistent in signing CB Darrell Revis after he won the Super Bowl with the Patriots. Now he was instrumental in trading for QB Aaron Rodgers who lasted only four snaps in the first game. All those moves hurt the team and, in a way, set them back. Just to get Rodgers he pushed Douglas to hire Hackett and sign WRs Lazard and Cobb instead of signing Carr as QB. With Rodger they get a two-year rental but with Carr they get a long term QB at the helm.

That's why I can't be down on Douglas because he practically rebuilt this team and IMO if Woody didn't meddle I believe the Jets would have been a lot better than what it is now.

its Idzik and its not even close. not only that 2014 draft but the year he left like 30 or more million in cap space and didnt sign more players to help a 8-8 team.

and 4 of you picked JD? seriously?

last year could be the best draft in Jets history. nobody with a draft like that can be the worst, or 2nd worst. sorry... end of story..

Voted Idzik as the worst and voted mediocre for Joe Douglas.

If you had asked me in August, I would've said good for JD, but holding on to the hope of Zach Wilson as the developmental backup has pretty much nuked the season after Rodgers went down. Next year will tell the tale - he'll either move back up to good with a playoff appearance or he'll be fired

Idzik is the worst. He was brought in to clean up Tannenbaum's big mess but never turned the corner. He took that huge opportunity to reset the team and flushed it down the toilet. For as bad as Mac was following up, he was set up to fail. That team had nothing going on.

Douglas has had some glaring problems (QB, OL, WR) but even with those problems, he's built the best roster since 2010. What he really deserves credit for is developing a roster that has long term potential instead of buying a pile of starters off the FA scrap heap and hoping for the best. He may find himself replaced by somebody who can finish the job, but he had a better plan and execution than the past maybe fifteen years of GMs. I know people criticize over failing to complete a reboot in three years or less but I can't recall any team turning it around that fast who had such a wretched roster for so long beforehand.

How is Joe Douglas pulling out Mike Tannebaums mess?

Maccagnan was consistently bad. That doofus gets my vote.  Idzik, if he were here longer, would probably take over as the worst... but we had many agonizing years of a terribly incompetent Maccagnan, now an assistant manager at a Minnesota Dunkin' Donuts.

Don't worry, before JD is done with his malfeasance and dereliction, he will be forever remembered as the worst NY Jets GM, of all time.

His next draft will be a train wreck. Woody is going to whistle past the graveyard, he's got his salesman Arodge selling season tickets for next year. LOL.

Mac was awful and easily the worst. He had no clue how to build a team. He drafted poorly, saddled the team with terrible contracts for declining players, and hired a terrible coach in Adam Gase. He completely ignored the offensive line which is such a critical unit for sustained offensive success in today's NFL.

Idzik's main issue was poor execution in the draft, but he actually had a sound strategy on how to build a team. He inherited a team in cap hell and financially turned things around relatively quickly. The Jets had $60m in cap space when he was fired, which Mac ended up completely botching. He essentially tore the team down while adding some decent value players such as Decker, Ivory, Harvin, Richardson, and Winters. And he was fired before getting a chance to really utilize the cap space he had created and build the team back up.

Joe Douglas is objectively bad at this point. He has very few successes left on his resume. He did a decent job of tearing the team down similar to Idzik, but his execution in building the team back up has been poor. The vast majority of his draft picks are always hurt or outright busts.

100% laughable that Idzik is rated as worse than McCagnan, as in epically laughable.

In two drafts Idzik drafted 4 oline 3 of which actually had decent nfl careers.

McCaganan drafted 3 oline in 5 years, when he knew full well he was going to trade up for a 'franchise' QB.

Idzik actually had a plan McCagnan has zero plan.  Idziks 13 pick draft was a huge bomb but no worse than some Douglas drafts.

100%. Was going to say this.

Idzik was actually a decent administrator, however, he was just so poor with the talent evaluation.

Mac was horrible at just about everything, terrible with cap, terrible with talent. No relationships, couldn’t trade. Awful.

I agree with everything you said except when it comes to JD. I think it’s recency bias.

Idzik is way better than Mac.  Idzik’s picks all bombed, but at least he hit on some FAs and was a penny pincher.  Meanwhile Mac set this franchise back a decade.  Not only were his drafts just as bad as Idziks, but his contracts were so epically bad that they are still hurting us to this day.

To put it in perspective, he took over the franchise after Idzik basically cleaned the house and put the finances in order.  He took that surplus, spent it on garbage, then when that failed, he ran out and borrowed from our future and still couldn’t hire anything competent.

You could make a very good case that Mac is the worst GM in NFL history.
