Joe Douglas' biggest FA mistake: Lawson over Hendrickson

I mean his biggest mistake is and always will be drafting Zach Wilson. Nothing else is even close.

But yes, signing Lawson instead of Hendrickson was a mistake, assuming Hendrickson would have come here.

Bigger question: who would want to come to the Jets as a free agent? I’m sure most college players are praying they don’t get drafted by the jets.

Carl Lawson has a resemblance to Rick James.  However, Rick James got a lot more action.

I think Lawson used to get very close to the QB when he played for Cincy but rarely got home, Douglas thought for some reason that would change with the Jets.

There were reasons to be optimistic. He had a good pass rush win rate when healthy. He was just injured a lot — if he could stay healthy there was reason to think he could be a double digit sack guy.

Here he continued to be injured and fell off a cliff after the Achilles. Bad signing but not a crazy one. Just didn’t work.

Hendrickson was better then and much better today.

I called this sh*t out from the beginning 

But everyone was obsessed with Lawson’s pressure percentages while calling Hendrickson a one year wonder lol.

People actually duped themselves into believing that this dude was suddenly going to transform into a 15+ sack a year EDGE based off some TC reports where he was owning the piss out of Becton and everyone else at the tackle spots, which it turns out is pretty easy to do to this team over the last decade.

Douglas took a run at Hendrickson but he was always going to the midwest.

Achilles rupture took away all his explosion. Not an excuse as JD is notorious for acquiring injury prone players.

He could have been a very good player for the Jets.

My first thought as well. Mostly because Lawson has been invisible for most of his time at the Jets while Tomlinson has actively been awful.

Well, Tomlinson was a pro bowler and nobody saw his sudden fall from grace coming. Plus, with Lawson there was an alternative in Hendrickson.

Tomlinson played next to a superstar left tackle in San Francisco, Trent Williams. The 49ers wisely invested in bringing back Williams and let Tomlinson go. Our dumbarse GM thought Tomlinson was the sh*t where in fact he is simply sh*t.

So are you saying that when JD signed a pro bowler, you were like "what a stupid move"? I find that hard to believe.

I'm saying that it was a stupid move to sign a guard for a big free agent contract when he benefited from playing next to a very accomplished left tackle, whom the 49ers made sure they brought back.

The fact that Tomlinson was a pro bowl guard at the 49ers is neither here nor there. The pro bowl has been greatly devalued as a measure of individual achievement.

Hell, if we would’ve signed Hendrickson instead of Lawson, the Jets may have bypassed both JJ and McDonald and invested in other areas.

JJ looks like a good get at the end of the 1st, and McDonald has shown a few glimpses as a rookie, but it just goes to show that decisions like this can have a snowball effect for 2, 3 or more years into the future.

Thats fair, but its imbued in the job, the responsibility for those moves that don't work.
