Rick Gosselin on the Draft (and the Jets)

We had Rick Gosselin from the Dallas Morning News as our guest on my 100% commercial-free, no one makes a dime from it, Long Island Sports Talk radio show last night. I have long considered him to be the most knowledgeable Draft resource out there.

Here is the link to the interview:

This is by no means an exhaustive transcript of all that was said, but it should give you a good guide. As always, I hope you enjoy and please tell a friend.

Thanks

The web guy over on NYJetsChat broke it up into two easy to download parts, you can find them here: http://www.nyjetschat.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=14988&view=findpost&p=146088

Here's my brilliant commentary:

Interesting that he says teams want a "safe pick" in the first round and therefore go for measurables over what a player's done on the field. Says teams want the right height, weight, speed in the first round. Kinda the opposite of what you'd expect, no? Shane?

D'Brick not in the league of Ogden and Pace.

Wonderlic hurts Young, but still has the highest ceiling of the QB's. It's two years down the road, though. All three of these QB's are better than last year's #1 Alex Smith.

Thinks the Jets should take a QB at #4 IF they feel there's a franchise QB on the board. Rates Mario and D'Brick higher than the QB's, though.

Vernon Davis rounds out his top six.

His comments about not watching tape himself are interesting. Says he makes his draft board up based on what he hears from NFL people. You'd expect a lot of misdirection from those guys, but apparently his method has been the most accurate of all these draft prognosticators over the last few years, hitting on 88 of the top 100.

Thirty-six players with first round grades bodes well for a Jets team with three picks in the top 35. Says most of those are "late first" grades though, making the 10-20 area of the draft "soft," where teams will be picking for need over BAP.

Feels the Colts will get a premium RB at 30, which bodes well for me in hoping the Jets target one at #29.

Thinks the NFL is going global, and that will have an impact on who the next commissioner will be. More regular season games abroad in the future.

Thanks to Maven for making the file more downloadable. Those of you who are just interested in Gosselin's draft commentary can probably get by with just part one.

It won't let me download it for some reason, so could someone just sumerize what he says about the stuff that involves the Jets?

It takes a while to download. There was just too much said to list everything. Basically everything from above is what was touched on. I got the feeling that he felt the first four picks would be Bush, Brick, Young or Leinart, M Williams. In that order. He also said that there are 36 or 37 players with first round grades this year which is a very high amount. This means the Jets will score 3 players with first round grades that should be able to come in and contribute right away.
