SouthernJet
Serious question to draft experts on board,, Who in this draft can play the 3-4 LB role that LT played. This is a must in a Belly-tree defense and the OLB actually lines up on line of scrimmage on opposite side of TE. In actuality they are a stand-up DE (like LT actually was),,Madden used to say 'LT is allpro LB, but he's really a DE'. I know no one will be as great as LT, BUT who in draft has potential to fill that kind of role?

But I think Hawk could fill that role. I don't think he would be the dominant player that LT was because of his size, but who is? Hawk has the speed to wreak some havoc in the backfield and will be a very effective pro LB, especially in the 3-4.

CluJet
Kamerion Wimbley - DE/OLB, FSU Manny Lawson - DE/OLB, NC State Both are in the 240-250 lb. range, and can get bigger. The thing that separates Lawson apart is his 4.
lawngnome o-line
Lawson stock isn't rising...its skyrocketing at this point He'll be in the high teens low twenties by draft day mostly becuase of his freakish 40 time and strength

RSJ
I do not think these guys are thinking that there is a LT out there to be had. They are just going to pick their types of players and put them into position to succeed.

Stonehands
I have been reading this thread and wondering why people are talking about Hawk, Carpenter and Lawson when you asked about Left Tackles. Then I re-read your post and realized I suck.
bitonti
LT is the greatest defensive player of all time. C'mon. Mario Williams has a unique skillset but has to learn how to use it. A more realistic question is who is the next Shawne Merriman or Johnny Abe... I think that player is indeed Manny Lawson. Wimbley is a hand on the turf DE minus 30 pounds, Lawson is a playmaker. While he's not LT he will do things I've never seen LT do like pick off screen passes. Very smart aware player. Bobby Carpenter is a good pick he is a Joey Porter type of pass rusher in the making. The Giants would probably love to take him...

I know the Belly tree coaches like to employ this scheme. I guess you are saying Lawson????
bitonti
Lawson yes - another guy who is an OLB who can step in right away and take over games is Ernie Sims out of FSU. Undersized (not like Lawson) but he plays with passion - doesn't look like LT but he kicks ass like LT.

bitonti
when is draft is Sims projected to go? he's risen to top 15 status arguable the second "true" LB off the board. I say true LB because Lawson could gain 20 pounds and become a hand in the dirt DE like Johnny Abe very easily... Sims is a true LB.

bitonti
so we have no chance at him, unless we trade up down with #4 or trade up with our 29th pretty much. i personally wouldn't trade for a LB - it's a luxury not a need - we need so many other positions. Sims is potentially a great player but there are alot of great players at that position who will be available throughout the draft.
ThunderbirdJet
I'm with bitoni.... that's why I took Lawson with the Ram's first round pick in the mock here.... even though he wasn't that high on most draft boards at the time. Lawson has (cliche time) the up side to be a real game breaking big play maker in the NFL. He's the kind of guy I would imagine using the way LT was used.... moving him around, setting him up for plays that are DESIGNED for him to wreck havoc. He has the speed for that sort of role. Wimbley might be my second choice.
