Question for the cap guys .

How does an incentive structured contract count against the salary cap?

I believe the Smith contract was like 7 million with various steps up to 20 million for the season. Obviously by the time he hits incentives to increase his earnings we’re already into the season so I doubt it counts more against the cap at each incentive , so does it just count against the cap for 7 million or do they count it vs the max the contract could be ?

And if it’s for the lowest figure then why aren’t more teams scamming this by doing ridiculous sh*t such as signing players for the minimum with the first incentive being something such as just arriving to the team facility for the first time taking the contract from vet minimum to whatever the real agreed upon number is

Over the Cap has Smith counting $12,250,000 towards the 2023 cap, leaving the Jets with $9,095,588 in cap space as of today.

Depends on what the incentive levels are.

If an incentive level is one he reached last season, then they assume (for this year's cap purposes) that he'll hit them again this year, no more, no less. ("Likely to be earned" or you'll see LTBE here & on other websites, as opposed to not likely or NLTBE).

He doesn't actually get the money for anything above the guaranteed/minimum amount & his salary (if that's not part of the guaranteed amount, and assuming he's not cut before the season).

  • If he doesn't reach an incentive that he would've reached with Dallas last year, then it's credited back to the team in the form of a higher cap ceiling next year. (Say next year's salary cap is set at $270MM, and Smith missed out on $7MM in incentives he would've hit the prior year; then next year the Jets' salary cap is $277MM not $270MM).
  • If he reaches last year's incentive and even more, then it's a cap charge next year (works like adding dead cap space), whether they sign him to an extension or not.

Incentive based contract clauses (like each accelerator) are judged as either likely to be earned or not likely to be earned based on if the player made those numbers last year.

Likely to be earned count this year.   Not likely to be earned only ding you if they're earned.
