With DJ Reed’s Struggles at LCB is it Worth Letting Sauce Move Around?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Many Stats nerds like Nania, discovered that DJ’s performance metrics favored him playing Right CB. By letting Sauce follow an opponent’s #1 around, will this diminish DJ’s play and overall the team’s defense?

During his time in Seattle:

On the switch back to right corner after playing the left side earlier this season:

"I'm just more comfortable in that spot, to be honest with you. When I watch film, I'm comfortable looking more on that side and knowing what I do. And that probably comes from me playing that side when I was at Kansas State, so I've been playing that for years instead of the left corner. It's kind of funny because I didn't think it would be much of a difference, but playing left corner felt different to me than playing right corner."

He’s a good dude and a great corner, but at the end of the day playing right or left corner next to Jamal “ Blitz Bitch” Adam’s will always make things look worse.

He really should be careful saying he can only play 1 spot in a contract year.

That quote was at his last stop in Seattle, but the stats back it up. He’s a very good RCB and an average to below average LCB. I can understand this, as I can’t turn my neck left as far as I can right and hip flexibility is worse left than right

Good post, smh at some of the replies as both his words and stats clearly articulate a preference.

I feel uniquely qualified to offer perspectives having played corner in the rough & tumble, notoriously competitive Bergen County flag football leagues back in the day.

In all seriousness and to answer your question, yes it makes sense because Sauce is an elite man cover guy who has the ability to take out the # 1 WR without safety help.

This opens up the Defense so much more for the Jets, allowing them to roll coverage elsewhere and to blitz more.

Lastly, Jets will still likely play zone more than half the time where I can envision Reed mostly staying on the right.

This following thing is a ridiculous fan obsession. The only CB I’ve ever seen do this was Revis.

It’s getting some traction by some of the beat writers. Could be a misdirection… why mess with something that ain’t broken

I would imagine that any drop in performance by Reed would be expected to be (more than) offset by the advantages of having Sauce cover the #1 all day. I was hoping that they’d’ve had Reed’s extension done by now, but maybe they’ll wait until they see how he performs this year in a little different role.

MCII or Reed? If you could only extend one?

Reed, in a heartbeat. I have very little doubt in their abilities to find and groom another slot CB. Outside guys are a lot harder to find.

Reed will be 28 in November. I’d do a 3 yr. deal at $15/yr with 3rd year easy out.

Nah. I'm going MCII. I think good nickel backs are extremely hard to find. One of the toughest spots on the field.

They should do it this year and free up some cash… making it a 4 year deal including this year

Don’t see too many nickel backs go in the top five picks in the draft. You do find most of them in the later rounds or even UDFA, though. Jets have too many contracts coming up to pay top nickel back money. This is just like them letting Huff walk before paying him. A player they saw as a limited specialist (which is what a nickel is) who they didn’t want to pay big money to. Again, I think they have the belief in themselves that they can coach these guys up, and the evidence suggests that they can.

They'll probably keep it how it's always been and if a guy starts giving them fits, then throw Sauce on him and see how it goes.

I don't think it'll be some drastic change.

I agree.  Personally, I was like Reed.  I always preferred the right side.  I have a little Wesley Walker in me - a severely scratched cornea from a childhood illness - and I always preferred having my better eye facing the bulk of the field which meant I preferred RCB or WR on the right side of the formation.  I did plenty of both, but that was what I would have picked if allowed, like if @OtherwiseHappyinLife would have let me join his team and choose in the tony Bergen County Flag Football League.

Why? In a contract year, wouldn’t he want to play in the spots where he feels he’s at his best?

Restricting himself to saying he’s only good in 1 spot when there’s 2-3 other spots CBs can line up.

That’s not how it works though. Not everyone is a Revis type. Most aren’t. Some guys are better playing their spot on the field. Hes looking for his next contract, he wants to put his best work on film this year.

What struggles? He allowed some catches?

He said it years ago.(although having a preferred spot makes sense. ) He is also going to get targeted opposite Sauce. Same as Cromartie opposite Revis.
