apparently Steelers thought they had a deal done during the draft with SF for either Aiyuk or Deebo but it fell apart at the last minute. Also they’re still perusing one of the two

Rumor: Steelers 'Made A Trade' for Deebo Samuel or Brandon Aiyuk That Fell Through; What Went Wrong?

The Pittsburgh Steelers' desire to upgrade - in a major way - at wide receiver is a sort of open secret.  And it's been assumed that the San Francisco 49ers receivers room was being targeted.  If a new report is legit, the Steelers' chase for either Deebo Samuel or Brandon Aiyuk was very real, with NFL insider and former team exec Michael Lombardi claiming that such a deal almost happened during the recent NFL Draft.  On the GM Shuffle podcast, Lombardi said that a Niners-Steelers trade was actually in place during the NFL Draft, but that (obviously) it fell apart.  "There was talk that at the draft that Pittsburgh thought they had made a trade,” Lombardi said. "Whether it was for Deebo or whether it was for Aiyuk, I don’t know. But then things kind of fell apart late."  Now comes the next chapter in this, of course. The 49ers' recent signing of Jauan Jennings to a two-year extension means a commitment of sorts there ... while Aiyuk especially remains disgruntled over his contract status. ...Which means the possibility of the Steelers rekindling this and trying to make a trade happen exists. Biggest problem: That draft day trade almost certainly meant 2024 picks going from Pittsburgh to the Niners. To do a deal now? The Niners wouldn't get a payoff until next April's NFL Draft.  There is still logic in believing the Steelers will be in the chase for another wide receiver this offseason, maybe with Aiyuk or Deebo Samuel popping back up on the radar.
