The “I’m Bored Topic for Discussion”: NY Jets have five of AFC East’s most exploitable players

Recommended Posts

DTs Leki Fotu, Javon Kinlaw, and Solomon Thomas, NYJ: Run defense

The Jets have some of the worst run-defending defensive tackles in the NFL beside one of the best. Leki Fotu came in to replace Al Woods but is nowhere near as capable as a space-eater. Fotu’s 40.7 PFF run defense grade ranked 91st out of 103 qualified defensive tackles (min. 150 run defense snaps). Thomas was below him at 97th (32.2). Javon Kinlaw was somehow worse than both, ranking 99th with a 31.3 grade.

The Jets project to be quite soft in the middle when Quinnen Williams is not on the field.

S Tony Adams, NYJ: Tackling

The Jets jettisoned their worst tackler in Jordan Whitehead, but their other starting safety from 2023 has a similar problem. Tony Adams struggles significantly as a tackler, both at the point of contact and in taking good tackling angles. Among 74 qualified safeties (min. 500 defensive snaps), Adams’ 15.3% missed tackle rate ranked 60th. He was at least partially responsible for six of the 22 explosive runs the Jets allowed in 2023, all of which came due to poor tackling form.

WR Allen Lazard, NYJ: Everything

Considering that this list is meant to primarily include starters, it’s difficult to figure out whether to use Allen Lazard here or not. However, since he’s currently taking first-team reps in OTAs, he can conceivably be a starter. Lazard was the worst receiver in the NFL in 2023, coupling a last-ranked yards per route run (0.68), drop rate (17.9%), and contested catch rate (23.4%) with terrible effort. Lazard is slow, stiff, a poor route-runner, and a drop machine.

I'm not sure I am that bored.

I am not usually the one to say PFF sucks, but when the Jets DTs are on their sh*t list it seems to be more scheme than player.  The Jets D was 11th in ypa and TDs.  I am not particularly worried about being 25th in rush yards against since they were 30th in attempts against.  That came because they were 2nd in pass yards against and 4th in net yards against per pass attempt.  That bodes well for playing with a lead where the other team has to pass.  Sure, things may end up somewhat different when teams are not running to kill the clock and playing a bit less safe, but the Jets run D sucking is an overblown invention of the press.

I also don't see how a list that is whining about Fotu, Thomas and Kinlaw can think it can get away from Lazard by saying "he's not a starter."  Those three are all playing the same position.  DT next to Williams.

i’m having trouble getting worked up about interior run defense - yes we give up some chunk plays that hurt - but really we have a potentially great defense with stars at every level - since perfect isn’t possible would you rather have a weak pass rush or a porous secondary? i am actually thrilled to read stories like this - now lazzard is a different story……

The Jets all world eltie defense has areas you can attack and hurt badly.

If I am opposing team i am attacking the safeties and linebackers in coverage all day long.

Great pass rush and corners?   Just avoid them and go to tight ends and rbs on short passing and exploit the weak areas.

The offense?  Sell out to stop Breece Hall.

The threat of a 13 win season, a division crown and a nice playoff run has the disease out in full force.  Holy smokes.  Lets scour the internet for anything negative!!!

I hate to do it but I have to agree whole heartedly with you here. Its as if the disease has evolved to erode the part of the brain that remembers how much an offense getting firsts downs and scoring can help a defense.

Every team has areas you can exploit.

The key is to invest in the right areas and pick your poison wisely.

On D, the Jets have invested in their pass rush, overall coverage scheme and Quinnen Williams to anchor the middle.

They’ll instead dare you to beat them via the run, not a bad strategy in today’s NFL.

On O, they are now well balanced with a QB capable of manufacturing points.  Of course they’ve taken on some elevated injury risk so that remains their poison until it doesn’t.

You don’t need to be afraid of contrarian discussion. Just like you are a Rah! Rah! Rose colored glasses fanboy… others are on the opposite side of the spectrum.

Me…. I lean Positive Vibes Only, but I’m not afraid to consider others opinions. That’s what this board is all about!

I agree, we should enjoy the hype before it goes up in smoke. The fall hurts more, but thats just foreplay for the next offseason!
