PositiveJetFan
Got some really bad news at the doctor. Age 38 male. Been having lower urinary tract symptoms and they did a digital rectal exam and ultrasound. Turns out I have an enlarged prostrate. This is rough. I am trying to manage it with medication, but will probably need surgery at some point. it’s tough as I have two young kids and I’m going to be dealing with this the rest of my life. What was your PSA? Was it super high?

Two years ago my doctor stopped doing DRE's because he said the #1 way of detectimg prostate cancer is a PSA blood test. Its one of the tests they run when you go for a physical. He told me that a DRE isn't that reliable because a tumor could be in an area where the doctor can't reach or feel. I am really surprised they didn't run your PSA. I'd strong recommend that you get that test done just for peace of mind. The negative ultrasound is a great indicator that your cancer free though. As far as an enlarged prostate, it's very common in men, especially as they get older. Granted you are young but there are many different medications that are effective for BPH. If that doesn't help there are a myriad of surgerical options, some of which aren't very invasive. I'm sorry to hear about your condition but the fact that they ruled out cancer should be a massive relief for you. Your diagnosis isn't as dire as you may think. Hang in there!
OilfieldJet
I’m 60+. I have had no prostrate issues, yet, but I would definitely get a full second opinion. At your age there may be other treatment options and/or other issues. I agree with @bicketybam, at least there is no cancer! Put yourself in those shoes for a minute. Best of luck and keep us posted.

How is everything going? Make sure you are at a place that offers world class care. You are your own advocate. Make sure you are understanding the info they are giving you and that someone is available to answer any questions. That is how you can make the best decisions. Avoid rabbit holes! Please keep us posted, thanks. 3

Scott Dierking
I had the surgery to "trim" the prostate. As for as surgeries go (and I have not had many) it was pretty easy. Surgery done in the morning, you are out the following morning as soon as you can show that you can pass urine. The only major problem is the first 24 hours after the surgery, passing uring will be painful. I am talking knee buckling painful, especially the first time. They provide a drug to numb that pain. You will be back to normal a couple of weeks after surgery after blood and scabbing clear themselves out of the system. Afterwards, you will not have to go as often (if that was a problem) and you will not have an urgency to go.
