The New York Jets training camp is underway, which means a few veterans will make their way to practice for a chance to earn a contract.

One such player the Jets gave a workout to was wide receiver Jarvis Landry, who was most recently with the New Orleans Saints.

 

 

Landry isn't the same player he used to be on the field, but has a game that could age well given that he was never an elite athlete to begin with.

College teammates with Odell Beckham with the LSU Tigers, he didn't receive as much attention but did get drafted in the second round of the 2014 NFL draft.

He lit the football world on fire to start his career with the AFC East rival Miami Dolphins. He had 400 catches for 4,038 yards and 22 touchdowns over his first four seasons.

 

He followed that up with a less successful, but still solid, stint with the Cleveland Browns. Things looked to go really downhill for him when he headed back home to the Saints.

The Louisiana native played only nine games due to injury troubles and recorded just 25 catches for 272 yards and a touchdown.

Injuries mixed with age for someone who was already a step behind as an athlete is normally a no-go. Given his short-yardage, good hands approach, he may still be viable as a slot receiver in a depth role.

The New York Jets chose the younger, taller option at wide receiver.

The Jets reportedly worked out three pass-catchers on Thursday, including five-time Pro Bowl selection Jarvis Landry. According to multiple reports, New York passed on the chance to sign Landry while reaching an agreement with second-year pro Isaiah Winstead.

 

 

The 6-foot-4 Winstead is set to turn 25 years old on August 9 while the 5-foot-11 Landry will turn 32 later this year and has not played in an NFL game since 2022.

With seven training camp practices in the books, the Jets are missing sophomore wide receiver Xavier Gipson, who is sidelined with what appears to be a short-term leg injury. Veteran Allen Lazard also sat out Wednesday's practice due to "camp soreness."

Winstead has been looking for another NFL opportunity after competing for the UFL's Arlington Renegades this past spring. The collegiate journeyman spent the 2023 preseason as an undrafted rookie with the San Francisco 49ers. After not surviving roster cutdown day, Winstead joined the 49ers Practice Squad for the first 13 weeks of the regular season.

Following college stops at Norfolk State and Toledo, Winstead enjoyed a highly-productive 2022 campaign with East Carolina. As a graduate student, the native Virginian led the Pirates in receiving. He totaled 88 catches for 1,085 yards and six touchdowns.

Winstead apparently caught the 49ers' attention last spring by producing a viral social media post that showed the receiver moving impressively on the field. On Thursday evening, the receiver confirmed his signing on the site now known as X by reposting a news report and adding a "Thank you God!!" message to it.

Meanwhile, Landry claimed he is "still ELITE" during a post last month on X. He participated in the Jackson Jaguars rookie minicamp in May as a tryout player.

It did sound like Gipson was playing pretty well before he got hurt & Corley certainly shined in Gipson's absence.

Post 6/1 trade is actually pretty favorable to the Jets, I think. They’d save whatever they don’t have to pay the acquiring team to take him, and incur $2.5 in dead money this year ($6.5 next year). Say they give him to the Chargers and eat $5 mil, they’d still be $2.5 ahead this season.

Brownlee played quite abit of specials last season, but Charles was more of the standout on Specials IMO.

What makes Lazard a diva?  You can suck without being a diva.  He just sucks.  Is it because he didn't jump up and down at the prospect of playing specials?  He is doing it despite not playing 40 snaps on specials over the last 4 seasons.  The only time he played significant snaps on specials was 2019 and he kind of seems like he'd suck at them.

An ACL repair is not the crap shoot that it once was.   If it was, teams wouldn't sign guys like Williams to big contracts with guaranteed money.

Breece had his repaired last year and had a great season. I think the odds Williams is healthy and able to contribute substantially this year are high.   What do you think?
