TuscanyTile2
I assume there are probably some people on here who were around for Super Bowl III. For those of us who weren't (and to try to create some positive mojo for this season), post any memories you have of it.

Trotter
remember parts of the game - specifically the Snell run left and a couple of catches by sauer (i think) father was laying on the floor in front of the tv with a pitcher of martini's and a bowl of chocolate. strange enough i remember more of the heidi bowl than the sb

OilfieldJet
We went skiing that weekend. I went into the ski shop and listened to the second half on a transistor radio owned by a salesman. There were about 6 adults, I was 9, they were all Colts fans. Bitches.
jetsfan56
I too remember the Heidi game disappearance better than the SB game. What I do remember is all the joy of winning after the game. All the sports reports and newspaper articles and hype afterwards, I couldn’t get enough. The parade, Namath’s commercials were lots of fun to see. As a 12 year old I thought winning in NY was the norm. Sent from my iPhone using JetNation.com mobile app

Jet_Engine1
Ah yes, Superbowl III. 2 years before I was born. I have so much SB3 memorabilia people have given me over the years its absurd, I have the full broadcast somewhere on a DVD from the original telecast in my garage or something... more Namath sh*t in my house than makes any sense.... and unfortunately, I couldn't give less of a damn about SB3 at this point if I tried. It's as bad as Lions fans reminiscing about 1957 or something, or people who still think some game in 1958 was the "Greatest Game ever" or the ******* Ice Bowl. FFS let's start a thread about how the Hittites defeated the Egyptians at Kadesh that one time. SBIII has become a punchline for ineptitude. Sad, but true.

SoFlaJets
I. can remember it very well. I was living in Garwood, a small town in Union County NJ and the family all went over to my grandmothers house on 4th Avenue and we ended up upstairs at my Aunt Mary and Uncle Ralph's. My favorite cousin Anthony and I sat on the floor in front of their color TV and watched the game from start to finish without once moving from our spots. I can remember what the day was like the clouds in the winter sky (when there were still winters) and the way the ice on the driveway crunched under foot as we walked from the Bonneville fake wooden side Ford station wagon to the front steps. It was a typical January winter day in the 1960's It was about 28° windy and cold and by the time the game was in the bag, the sun was starting to set over the Westfield sky and the family started loading up and heading out when the champagne was being opened and the Jets players were getting the eyes happily burned by it. This was the start of an unbelievable year of NY Sports The Jets beat the Baltimore Colts, The Knicks and Willis Reed, Clyde Frazier, Bill Bradley, Dave Debusschere beat the Baltimore Bullets and Wes Unseld on their way to a World Championship trophy vs the Lakers. Then 10 months later the Mets beat the Baltimore Orioles (much to this Yankees fans' chagrin). I gotta tell you guys the 3 sports championships in 1 year were something we will probably never see happen again, but I gotta say NOTHING compared to the Jets winning the Super Bowl. It was a cultural change, the Jets were everywhere, Johnny Carson Show, Playboy After Dark (a cool TV show) Namaath was in the movies and the Jets were the kings of the world. All I can say is I really hope that you guys get to see how great it feels. You guys DESERVE it-all the time, energy and money Jets fans expend on this team, it needs to happen. As for this old guy if it does happen and I'm no longer here, I'm OK with it because I've had a good life and I got to see some of the most amazing things that this world has had to offer, I was 13 and it was a week or so after Christmas break. One thing I do wish is I wish I had the poem I wrote about the game still, I used Casey At The Bat as the template for it. I had drawings of Namath George Sauer Johnny Sample Jim Turner Tom Matte and Johnny Unitas on the construction paper we used to draw on in art class. I know it started like this" The outlook wasn't brilliant for the New York Jets that day, The Colts were favored by 18 points and they hadn't even begun to play" No Ernest Lawrence Thayer I, but hey I was 13, and in the 8th grade. Years later I was driving a Yellow Cab in West Palm Beach and I got a fare to pick up in the Airport line, it was Curt Gowdy and and the first thing I asked him about was that game, from 20 years before.

He wasn't really too with it TT, I guess after just coming off a flight that he probably slept through which didn't leave him too cognizant. The other thing I really wanted to ask him about was on this show called The American Sportsman that would take celebs of the day on adventures and Curt Gowdy was the narrator and sometimes went along for the rides. This was a show that that William Shatner, during the Star Trek series days in the 1960s', that Shatner with a bow and arrow killed a grizzly bear! Now talk about something that could never happen in today's world but it was like an episode of Star Trek with Kirk fighting the Gorn monster https://www.startrek.com/videos/watch-captain-kirk-vs-gorn again, nothing memorable from Gowdy. The celebration on the field that included players and fans who came onto the field from the stands was incredible. I loved Joe Namath and Willis Reid but Seaver was a god. I can see how a Mets fan can feel that way but as far as a cultural change-not one Met was ever given his own show or given a starring role in a movie with the #1 sex symbol on the planet at the time (Ann Margret) Joe also had the hottest night spot in all Manhattan Brothers III which Pete Rozelle made him sell. So as far as which series of events had the biggest impact is something that can be debated. But from these eyes watching the world as I did that whole amazing year of 1969, it started with that Super Bowl win, then I sat on the floor at Ray Yarussi's house and we all watched Neil Armstrong walk on the moon on live TV-amazing. Then walking home I remember looking up at that amazing full moon thinking maybe I'd be able to see the Lunar Module with my own eyes. The Vietnam war was still raging at the time and my big brother Wayne was in his 4th year fighting first with the 101st Airborne then later with The Green Berets winning Silver and Bronze stars and two Purple Hearts -My big brother was my hero and I'd always sit up with my mother and we'd wait, and hope that maybe he's call and when he did, I always knew when it would be him because of the way that the phone would ring. Then the music world was exploding with Woodstock in August and the month before the black cat crossing home plate against the Cubs starting their collapse and the Mets beating the O's in 5 games. The interlocking happened on October 14th Gary Gentry pitched 6 2/3 shutout inning and got the 5-0 win that Nolan Ryan got the save in his only WS appearance of his 27 year career! That same night the Knicks opened their own Championship season at the Garden by blowing out the Seattle Supersonics 126-101-The Captain Willis Reed led the Knickerbockers with 28 points and 15 rebounds. 1969 was an amazing year to be alive on this planet.
