Eagles release veteran tight end (msn.com)

The Eagles signed C.J. Uzomah in early April.

After four months to make an impression, the veteran tight end is returning to free agency.

Philadelphia cut Uzomah on Wednesday to make room for offensive lineman Jason Poe.

Philly guaranteed Uzomah $718K at signing, that will turn into dead money.

He seems like a great guy… He just really can’t play anymore. Maybe the Bungles take him back.

He is a great guy who had some great play.  He had a great career.  But like with all NFL players, his time was up.

Unfortunately, many players either naturally fade or stop trying as hard when they get their second contracts.

The Jets were CJU's THIRD contract.  He made $20+mm with the Bengals (the first four years relatively cheap as a mid-round draft pick), and then he earned $16mm with the Jets.

For some reason the Eagles gave him a chance, but for JD to give him a third contract was very optimistic.  I would guess that the track records for multi-year 3rd NFL contracts is very poor.   The motivation just goes away.

If I am a GM I want as many draft picks as possible to take chances on young players wanting their second contracts.  I am only giving second contracts to players of exceptional work ethic and character.  And I am only giving one year contracts (which could be large) to players beyond their second contracts.
