Creed Humphrey completely resets the Center Market

Recommended Posts

They gave him roughly 150% of the previous highest average annual value for a center - there are going to be some pissed off teams over this contract, and some very happy centers:

The Kansas City Chiefs found an absolute stud of a center in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft, and now he has cashed in. Per ESPN, Creed Humphrey has agreed to a four-year, $72 million extension that includes $50 million guaranteed. This new contract locks Humphrey in through the 2028 season, and makes him the highest-paid center in NFL history.

Humphrey's new AAV of $18 million surpasses Frank Ragnow's $13.5 million, which previously ranked first among all centers. In 2023, Humphrey allowed 16 pressures with four sacks, per PFF, while the Chiefs went on to defeat the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.

The No. 63 overall pick out of Oklahoma became an immediate starter on Kansas City's offensive front, and trusted teammate of star quarterback Patrick Mahomes. In three NFL seasons, Humphrey has never missed a start, made two Pro Bowls, been named a second-team All-Pro once and has won two Super Bowls

Humphrey was ranked as CBS Sports' No. 1 center entering 2024. He's a big reason the Chiefs have one of the best interior offensive line groups in the league, with Joe Thuney and Trey Smith beside him in the trenches.

Sucks to be KC. Imagine having to pay all those players while paying Mahomes a half a billion dollars? haha. Hell no. The only way it can get worse is if they gave away their draft picks like the Rams.

No thanks. Give me my cap space and draft picks.

Taking Elijah Moore like 30 picks before Humphrey when people in the draft forum were screaming for Humphrey looks like a sharp move.

"Joe Douglas is not a terrible gm"

Tally ho!

Onward and upward!

Replace Moore for Humphrey and that draft would have been ok even with the disaster that was Zach Wilson.

I wanted the jets to draft him, but it is what it is

I wanted him.  Mocked him to us at least a thousand times that year.

To be fair, I mocked a center to us every year: Humphrey, Linderbaum, Cushenberry, BadASZ, and even Tip-py.

really???? 🙄

We already have people planning the Breece Hall trade.

Yep. I kind of get it, we have sucked for so long, amassing draft capital and cap space feels like what we should be cheering for.

Draft capital and cap space are what teams that need to get better need a lot of

Teams that are already "better" don't.

My best guess is that this will end up looking like a cheap deal in 1-2 years.
It's a self fulfilling prophecy in a way.

Pay him 50% more than the current highest paid player - you reset the market. Pay him 10% more - reset the market. 100% more ... you get the picture.

New deals will always look to trump the previous deal, so each new deal will, in time, look smart compared to those that come after.

This seems like the natural extension of how the guard market kind of exploded this off-season. Teams realizing that you need quality across the OL, not just at tackle, and price for the interior guys is increasing accordingly.

There are just half as many starting centers as there are guards and Humphrey was the first guy to get there.

With a cap approaching 255 million it’s going to be interesting to see how teams balance out their rosters.  QBs are going for 50 million or so.  Top oline are nearing 20.  Wrs are 20 and over.  CBs are 20 and over.  Teams are going to be hard pressed to keep more than 6-8 of the high priced guys.
