Carl Lawson not making the 53 man roster in Dallas

Recommended Posts

Cowboys released DE Carl Lawson.

Lawson signed with the Cowboys two weeks ago. Per ESPN’s Todd Archer, they may opt to keep Lawson on the practice squad for the time being, but other teams will have a chance to sign him. Lawson has played in 74 games while making 31 starts and has 27 sacks to his name, along with 28 TFLs. At just 29 years old, it’s possible he finds another team immediately in need of his services and avoids hanging around on a practice squad.

One of JD's worst moves was reworking Lawson's contract last year, guaranteeing some money, and pushing a share of the cap hit into this year.

Should have moved on last year - the guy had no guaranteed money left until the Jets decided to give him some to sit on the inactive list for most of the season.

Amazing that it somehow ended up meaning that BOTH guys suck.  We couldn't even go 1 for 2 there.  Only the Jets, man.  Only the Jets.

I'm young enough to remember everyone kicked the piss out of Becton. I bet you would beat him like a drum at the all you can eat buffet as well.

Amazing (or is it depressing) how many players we lean on heavily year after year who when we finally pull the plug can't even make a another roster.  Like we are the last stop before retirement.

And even then, year after year, you have Jets fans worrying that players this team lets go are gonna go on to be HOFers elsewhere.  Despite there only being like 6 guys who the Jets let go for suckitude/overlooked skillset/lack of scheme fit and ended up even serviceable elsewhere:

  • Hugh Douglas
  • James Farrior
  • Vilma
  • Danny Woodhead
  • Demario Davis
  • Snacks Harrison

Maybe you can make a case for Leonard Williams, until you remember:  1) His only Pro Bowl season was with the Jets; 2) He's done very little since his 2020 season with the Giants; and 3) You might not even be aware of the team he's on these days.  It's the Seahawks.  I had to look it up.

As for Geno Smith, it took him 9.5 years to become a slightly below average NFL starter.  Kudos to him, but was that one really a Jets failure in letting him go?  2 other franchises brought him in and let him go before he became Russell Wilson's backup in Seattle.  If that's the posterchild for why you should be patient with a "meh" QB, I can live with that level of wrongness.

Otherwise....that's it.  That's the list.

He just never recovered after the injury. The hope heading into last year was that 2022 was just about slowly recovering and 23 would have him back closer to pre-injury form, but it just never happened. Feel for the guy, he looked like he was about to explode during that 21 camp. And then his Achilles did instead

I've just remembered that, at the time, the Jets were interested in both Lawson and also Trey Hendrickson in free agency.

The Jets opted for Lawson. The Bengals replaced Lawson with Hendrickson, for less money than the Jets paid Lawson, and the rest is history.

We thought we has won that one, but the Bengals made out like bandits there.
