Brenden Bates receives serious late interest heading into NFL Draft

After spending six seasons at Kentucky, tight end Brenden Bates is receiving some serious late interest heading into the draft from NFL organizations. The Cincinnati (Ohio) Archbishop Moeller product has spoken with the Arizona Cardinals, Baltimore Ravens, Chicago Bears, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Miami Dolphins, and Minnesota Vikings. Bates is also receiving interest from the Los Angeles Chargers and New York Giants. The Cincinnati Bengals just hosted the hometown product for a private workout, according to Aaron Wilson.

Brenden Bates (6-4, 246) did not receive an invite to the combine but a strong pro day performance which included an excellent 40-yard dash time (4.66) and broad jump (10’02”) has put him on the radar for NFL organizations.

The former high-three star recruit in the class of 2018 played over 1,200 offensive snaps during his time at Kentucky recording 26 receptions for 272 yards. Bates was a traditional Y tight end in Kentucky’s pro-style scheme but also spent some time playing fullback. That experience along with some good testing data could allow the tight end to sneak into the seventh round next weekend.

Zack Rosenblatt @ZackBlatt
Brenden Bates scouting report from @dpbrugler in The Beast:

"Lining up primarily inline, he was a run-blocking tight end for the Wildcats’ offense (just six targets in 2023), but he caught the ball well when he had the chance. Bates is a good-looking athlete, with the core strength to pop defenders on lead blocks. He plays with an edge in the run game, although better control is needed. Despite seeing few targets, he has the body control for smooth adjustments and strong hands to finish. Overall, Bates is a better pass catcher than his production would indicate, and he has the size/speed tools to develop into a complementary Y tight end."

If it is to the roster, Mitchell is on the bubble.

It has to be to the roster.

I'm somewhat confident the jets will carry 10 OL, so unless they bring another OL I think Mitchell is safe. Brownlee or one of the younger DBs feels like the most likely cut candidates to me right now, or perhaps (though unlikely) Izzy. Doubt a young DL will go unless Reddick returns but that's the other bubble group to my eye.

There's at least a lot of film on this guy vs NFL-ish competition

Another plus of the Brenden Bates pickup: He tied for the 3rd-most special teams tackles in the NFL this preseason with 4.

no he is very visible. when he takes a cheap shot and gets a penalty called on him

LOL.  I missed adding that caveat this time around.

Other than the aforementioned dumb penalties in big spots and his penchant for having pictures taken while not wearing a shirt, Mr. Clemons has been a giant nothing burger for us.

Maybe we find a team that is planning to have a swim suit calendar and Clemons seems to them like he might a winner for that.
