ARodJetsFan
Dolphins signed HC Mike McDaniel to a three-year extension. McDaniel signed a four-year contract with the Dolphins in 2022. Since then, he has led the Dolphins to a 20-14 record and a playoff berth each season. His offense has ranked in the top 10 in yards each year and was second in points in 2023. He’s also extrapolated the most out of Tua Tagovailoa after Tagovailoa looked like little more than a league-average signal-caller during his first two seasons in the league. McDaniel has been an aggressive, innovative play-caller and is one of the more recent successes off of the Shanahan coaching tree. With a quarterback just getting into his prime and explosive weapons to run his high-powered offense, McDaniel is now locked in for five more years as he and the Dolphins continue to challenge for a top playoff spot in a stacked AFC. TuscanyTile2
Mike McDaniel is the best thing I can ever remember about the Dolphins. A low bar to clear but I don't mean it in a sarcastic way. He's hilarious!

Hes all speed philosophy holds up in Sept/Oct but once the weather turns, the dolphins are all finesse and cant win a game. This is going to look real bad when the dolphins finish 8-9 this year.

UntouchableCrew
I think he's a good coach and an innovative offensive mind. I'd have probably waited to see what happened in year three before extending him, but I think he's a good fit for that team and what they want to do.
rangerous
he kind of backed into things the past two seasons. his teams can be streaky. i don't see where he gets so much press as an offensive innovator. he's got those two receivers in tyreek and waddle who are both fast as cats and can beat out nearly any db. tua doesn't need to throw much more than 10 yards. their defense is so-so. he really needs to have way more success this season to justify his contract.

BigRy56
You have got to appreciate what McDaniels has done with Tua and the offensive system he's put in place. With that said though... his teams have started out red hot and then completely fallen flat. If a NYJ coach blew a 3 game division lead with 5 weeks left in the season, and then received an extension, not too many people would be thrilled. I could see him being the long-term coach of the Dolphins, but I can 100% see a scenario in which his team implodes and he's considered fireable heading into next year.

Why not see how he does in December/January of this year before making this decision? I dont disagree that they should have waited but I think that his teams fade because they are gassed by Dec. All that fast paced playing, running long routes, taking hits wears down the average player. When players are in a system that is predicated by speed they push the envelope even more. If the same players stay in that system for an extended period of time I feel/fear they may adapt and you will see less shrinking in the dec/jan time frame. This year will tell alot of course but consider this, people here on this site look at wins and losses to determine that Saleh is not a good coach despite not having a legit qb his entire tenure. Using that same logic then Mcdaniel's wins/losses mean he is a good coach no?

He's saying that if Tua was playing for Robert Saleh, he'd look like Zach Wilson -- i.e. he totally sucks and all of his success is due to the "genius" of McDaniel. Certainly wouldn't go that far but McDaniel certainly "maximized" Tua relative to what we saw when he was under Flores.

This extension for McDaniel will look terrible and the upcoming extension for Saleh will look genius. McDaniel understands what kind of QB Tua is, strengths and weaknesses, and what he needs to thrive. He made a conscious decision to build his team around blazing speed, to get the ball out quickly to mitigate Tua's lack of mobility and lack of a power arm, and to maximize his accuracy in the short to intermediate areas. That's what (good) coaches are supposed to do.

He had the tools—like a good QB and solid players—but it does make me question Saleh. Yes, he had terrible QB play, but when you look at the offense, it’s clear why it's struggling. Joe is unquestionably an amazing GM, arguably the best in the league. But Saleh? While he's a good defensive coordinator, he hasn't shown much offensively. The big issue is that despite his QB problems, the offense didn't even attempt obvious game plans or strategies that could have given them the best chance to win. The play calls and game plans were just bad, and that falls on coaching. I want to give him a pass, but the blame really does lie with him. The buck stops at the head coach. There have been too many times when he's made questionable in-game decisions, even with timeouts. If Saleh wants this extension, he needs to step up. Right now, I’m not sure what he brings to the table. Rodgers drives the offense, and our defensive coordinator seems more than capable—maybe even better than Saleh himself. It's crazy to think about it, really.

jayrad01
Rewarding mediocrity. How about post a playoff win first. That would be the same thing as the Jets giving Saleh an extension for having a top five defense 2 years in a row it's called a head coach for a reason not an offensive coordinator or defensive coordinator.

Yea, I guess I’m somewhat of a Tua guy, but he had like a 90 QB rating under Flores in his first 2 years. He’s miles (upon miles) better than Zach Wilson. The biggest concern with Tua is still his durability. But he’s pretty good when he plays.

I think it's tough to ignore that he generally crumbles against the best competition and in bad weather. The kind of guy who excels when conditions are perfect and everything is going according to plan but as soon as the going gets tough he falls apart.
