Aaron Rodgers dusts off new version of 'relax' after Jets' loss - ESPN

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Ten years ago, quarterback Aaron Rodgers famously told a nervous Green Bay Packers fan base to "R-E-L-A-X" after the team's 1-2 start.

Coming off the New York Jets' blowout loss on Monday night, Rodgers dusted off the oldie but goodie, delivering a revised version Wednesday for fans -- and perhaps teammates -- who might be edgy about the team's current plight.

"I think we always have to stay relaxed," he said. "It's a long season. I think, at times, people think the season is like you're out in the prairie or the desert and you're moving around trying to find water, but it's more like a nice, slow Bolero, where we're just swaying with the music and reacting to whatever comes to us and through us, just trying to not get too high with the highs or too low with the lows."

Perhaps fittingly, the Jets -- 32-19 losers to the San Francisco 49ers -- will head to Music City in search of their first win. They face the Tennessee Titans (0-1) on Sunday at Nissan Stadium, looking to eliminate the sting of a season-opening defeat that fueled panic among some fans.

"The league is a lot different than when I said 'relax' years ago in that there's just so much more coverage [and] there's so much more opportunity for overreaction," Rodgers said. "So I get it. We want to win, the fans want to win, the organization wants to win, but the process has to be the same.

"If it's good enough in Week 1, it's good enough in the playoffs, so we've got to stick to the process and the preparation, the way that goes, and trust that it's good enough."

After Rodgers' "R-E-L-A-X" comment, the Packers won four straight, finished 12-4 and reached the NFC Championship Game. He delivered that line on Sept. 23, 2014 -- a 10-year anniversary of sorts.

Speaking of anniversaries, Rodgers said he received an early-morning text Wednesday (he wouldn't say from whom) reminding him that it was on this day last year (Sept. 11, 2023) that he tore his left Achilles on the fourth snap of the season.

Reflecting on the past year, Rodgers said "there was a lot of emotion, a lot of perspective and gratitude. So a lot has changed in the year and I'm glad to still be playing and feel healthy." Clearly, he wanted to keep the focus on the next opponent and polishing certain aspects of his game.

Against the 49ers, Rodgers completed 13 of 21 attempts for 167 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He led the Jets on two touchdown drives.

"I feel good about what I did out there," he said. "For the most part, I felt like my feet were good, the perfunctory signals were good [and] subtle adjustments. There are some things I can clean up, for sure, but it was good to get back out there and feel like I was in the flow at least."

"He looked awesome," tight end Tyler Conklin said. "Some of the throws that he made out there, obviously he didn't lose his arm talent, right? That was his first time playing football in a year, so I can only imagine how he's going to be feeling after we get rolling."

The Jets will need to be better on defense, which allowed eight straight scoring drives on Monday night. They surrendered 180 rushing yards, as backup running back Jordan Mason gashed them with cutback runs to the outside. Players said there will be an emphasis this week on tightening up their edges.

Edge rusher Jermaine Johnson, who said he apologized to teammates for having a subpar game, said they might be able to rattle Titans quarterback Will Levis.

"He's a talented athlete and can throw the ball pretty well," Johnson said, "but just watching film and just understanding some things about him, especially when he comes out, he's one of those guys that, when things aren't going his way, he kind of can panic a little early."

I don't think it is inconsistent (A) to express disappointment and frustration at the Jets' week 1 overall effort, the performance of the coaching staff and how some of JD's decisions and draft picks are looking, while also (B) asking people relax and noting that it is only week 1.

It was also week 1 for the 49ers, and they looked ok.   But my guess is that there is a statistic on the likelihood of making the playoffs if you start 1-0 versus 0-1, and I don't think that the odds are the same.  Teams that win their first game are more likely to make the playoffs.

But let's see how next week looks.

SF ran 72 plays
On 42 of the 72 they either had a FB or 2nd TE in the game. Juszczyk played 40 snaps. Eric Saubert (TE2) played 19 snaps.
They ran the ball against us 85% of the time with Saubert in the game.

They were telling us what they were doing and we did nothing to adjust or change. We continued staying in light fronts with 3 down linemen, 3 LBs and we moved Ashtyn Davis or Tony Adams up into the box. It was a ******* joke. They also ran outside zone 61% of the time to make our DBs tackle who suck ass at tackling.

How about wining games and stop the talk...

I have never been someone who felt coaches should motivate professional athletes, but their real job is teaching the x's and o's of the game plan.

That game was like we had dad's who never watched the game coaching their pee wees.

the jets "bee swarm" 4-2-5 is built for the contemporary pass happy nfl.  It can stop the run if needed, but only if the 4 guys up front are stout and the edges are covered by the LB/SS that has the job to be there on a particular running play.  Getting rid of JFM and Huff in favor of what they have now may have been a mistake.  too early to tell.  The jets will do well against most offenses because most are geared to pass the ball, but they will be challenged by teams that can run power.

i still see them winning 10 games or more if rodgers stays healthy, but they cant get by teams that can run on them unless they can score a lot of points by passing the ball.  the offense has to evolve in order to overcome that defensive weakness should they run into a team that can and will push their defense around.

I want to love Rodgers, but this Johnny come lately can fist himself.  We've been here for decades and will be here for decades after him.

The guy is around for 4 plays and a summer and is telling us to get off the train because we're unhappy with getting our butts kicked on national tv again?????

He just eviscerated the JN trolls and haters 😂😂😂

Every critic isn’t a “hater” or a “troll” although branding them as such is modern society’s latest technique to summarily dismiss uncomfortable opinions.

its because he never had fans quit on his team after week 1. GB has a long history of winning and so does he.

and lets be honest, its one week for Christ's sake. people need to relax.

I am not worried about the Jets as a whole, and I agree, the defense should be as strong as it was to win 10 plus games.

This game, the team looked like they were not in game shape and the coaches did nothing in the second half to show they were going to make any effort to stop the run.

The team should have taken reps in the preseason, of live game reps, with game type fatigue.  Practice can not duplicate the intensity.

This game was on the coaches, and poor game planning / adjustments.

That said, I am never a coach needs to go guy.  However, I have major concerns that Bobby is the wrong guy for NY.

Arod seems like a pretty intelligent dude.  He should have known many Jet fans are very emo.

His "jump off, but don't come back" comment seems foolish.

C'mon Arod.  You're 40 now.  You should know how to handle emo folk better.

Ha.

So he apologizes for doing nothing week 1.

Then proceeds to diss his next opponent and serve up bulletin board fodder.
