Nats GM holds tight on Soriano

By PETER BOTTE

DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

Yankee officials still insist no contact has been made, and Washington GM Jim Bowden won't say whether he's already been in touch with Yanks counterpart Brian Cashman about the possibility of Alfonso Soriano eventually returning to the Bronx if Melky Cabrera and Bubba Crosby can't cut it as Hideki Matsui's replacements.

But the Nats' GM has acknowledged his team's 12-24 start already has rival executives circling overhead like vultures, despite more than two months remaining before the July 31 trade deadline.

"Due to our poor start, we've had a lot of teams who've called inquiring about a lot of our quality players because of where we are in the standings," Bowden told The Washington Times. "And certainly, we have a significant amount of talented players, although we have a tremendous amount of underachieving going on. Certainly the baseball world recognizes the talent we have.

"I don't want to talk about specific clubs or specific players except for the fact that we will listen obviously to any club, and I've told clubs that we have interest in discussing deals that will bring in young, impactful players to Washington to build this thing long-term."

Soriano initially resisted a shift from second base to left field after an offseason trade from Texas to Washington, but it's widely believed he'd gladly accept that switch if it meant returning to New York. Manager Frank Robinson reinstated Soriano as his leadoff hitter Friday, and said the perennial All-Star will remain in that role for the rest of the season, or however long he stays with the Nats. Soriano was batting .328 in 15 games as the Nats' leadoff man, but just .186 (8-for-43) after a switch to the No. 3 hole.

His carrer OPS is 820. Thats only a little over the major league average and his terrible k/bb ratio kills any help that you get from his power (which is overated too 501 carrer slg%) not to mention the fact that he's a liability in the field no matter where he plays.

Pretty much. The Yanks really dont need another guy who strikes out a ton.

Since when has that mattered?

I would grab him.

It matters because he's ridiculously overpaid for a guy who strikes out a ton.

Out of curiosity, why would you grad Soriano?

1.) Sori is a 30-30 threat.

1A.) Melky is a 5-5 threat.

1B) Bubba Crosby is no threat.

2.) The Yanks line-up just looks like your run of the 100 mill without Sheff and Matsui.

The yankees don't have the best lineup in baseball and they didn't even when matsui and sheffield were healthy.

toronto? honkey please

It's no fluke they have scored more runs then the yankees. Wells Overbay Glaus and Hillenbrand could always hit and this year Rios has become a flatout star and Reed johnson is hitting 350. You might not like it but they have a better lineup. The reason the yankees are in first place is their pitching.

yeah, because the yankees pitching staff is so solid this year, right?

Yeah in fact it is. The starters have been solid and the bullpen has been great. Thats why they have the 2nd best ERA in the league and the 3rd best in baseball...

The Yankees don't need another outfielder.

When the Yankees get solid starting pitching like they did with Wright and Wang, they'll usually win. When they get lousy starting pitching like Johnson today they will likely lose.

when a pitcher goes 6ip 4er they should win that game most of the time.

Think it would mean that Sheff or Soriano become a fulltime DH and Giambi a fulltime 1st baseman. They aren't picking up Sheff's option after all his nonsense, so the salary hit wouldn't really be that bad. Problem becomes that while Soriano fattens his stats on weak pitchers, he still strikes out a lot, hasn't really learned the strike zone and seems to disappear against superior pitchers-the kind you'll see in the postseason.

You should learn a bit about Melky before going off on him. You are starting to sound like Mike Franscesca.

And usually they will. Unless the other pitcher is throwing strike1, strike 2 all game long. Heren did not get to a 3 ball count on anyone until the 6th, I believe. He was awesome.

Sometimes, it's not the lineup. The other guy out there deserves the credit, and yesterday, Heren was outstanding.
