faba
deal Livan Hernandez to D-Backs for prospects Associated Press WASHINGTON -- Washington Nationals ace Livan Hernandez was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday for a pair of minor league pitchers. Hernandez, 31, is 9-8 this season with a career-high 5.34 ERA in 24 starts. He has been hampered by a sore knee for most of the season but had a strong outing on Sunday, allowing two runs over seven innings at San Diego. The Nationals received two 23-year-old prospects: right-hander Garrett Mock and left-hander Matt Chico. Both will report to Washington's Double-A affiliate in Harrisburg. The move is symptomatic of last-place Washington's desire to build for the future under new owner Ted Lerner, while Arizona is looking for an edge in the competitive NL West. The Diamondbacks trailed first-place San Diego by two games entering Monday's play.

This should be good, from an amusing angle.

Scott Dierking
missing out on cheaply picking up a starting pitcher who's better than John Maine How many games do you believe John Maine will appear in the WS? CHEAPLY? Livan is owed 7 Mill next year. That is not cheap. The Mets do not seem to want to wrweck payroll, as other teams want

Scott Dierking
Until the last two games Hernandez has actually been terrible most of the year Terrible would be putting it nicely. The man will eat up innings for you, if that is what you need. Obviously, that is not what the Mets need today. Livan will put tons of runners on base, and he would not serve well coming out of the pen, and that is what he would be used for, barring injury to one of teh current starters down the stretch. A big PASS on Livan for the Mets.

As always, you fail to answer a direct question-How does John Maine fit into teh Mets WS? How woudl Livan Hernandez take that role. Please support your off the wall claims. Or, are you just looking to make a stir by saying outlandish things?
mbn007
Scott's point is well taken. With their large double-digit lead, the mets do not need a 5th starter to make the post-season. Maine is more than adequate for their current purposes. Come playoff time, the rotation is a solid Pedro, a hopefully (for the Mets sake) solid Glavine, and El Duque and Traschel for Games 3 and 4. I do not believe that Livian would push either one out. In other words, Livian is not a sure-fire difference maker in the rotation like a Zito or a Willis would have been. My concerns reside with who and how our #2's and #3's perform this offseason. Livan Hernandez is nether of those, and would not be an upgrade. At that price tag, it is an unneeded waste of money. Now, if teh Mets were in a race for the division, I could possible think otherwise. They are not.
LionelRichie
you guys have done a marvelous job of hijacking this thread. i think this is a great trade for both teams. the nationals get 2 potential 12-15 game winners and rebuild their woeful farm system while the diamondbacks get an inning eater and proven stretch run pitcher to make a run at the weak nlw or wc. hernandez has been hurt all season and is just now starting to revert to form. look for him to come up big the rest of the season. i still can't believe the nationals didn't move soriano. if they could have had mccarthy from the white sox and these 2 from the diamondbacks that would have been a good starting point to rebuild for '08 when the new stadium opens. Scott Dierking
Livan hasn't lost in his last 8 starts the Mess could use that The Mets have that in Steve Trachsel and John Maine. Newsflash, Blackout, the Mets are not in a real division race. They are going to win the East without Livan Hernandez. Livan Hernandez WOULD NOT be a key cog to the Mets getting to, or winning the World Series. They have plenty of current parts that fit his mediocre/poor bill. Teh Mets DO NOT need to add a wasted 7 mill to next year's payroll when they will be looking to get one of the young arms entrenched and are looking for a power arm. Livan brings NOTHING to the Mets that they don't already have. they would have a headache of a time getting him off the roster ala Kaz Matsui. Geez.
