Frank Ramos, the Jets p.r. man who used to be your boss, recalls that as a young go-getter you often had helpful suggestions for relations with the media. So say hello to Eric Mangini, a guy who hasn't coached a game but already makes Tom Coughlin look as chatty and accessible as Al Sharpton. Sure, 99 percent of the job is winning, but part of the fun of rooting for a team - especially in a sport that plays once a week - comes from following what coaches and players say and do. Alas, Mangini's players are so spooked, they don't say much. The Bill Belichick Mini-Me routine already is wearing thin, other than for comic relief. Take the depth chart in the game notes for the preseason opener: Players are listed in alphabetical order. Danny Abramowicz, you retired too soon! Early in the week, Erik Coleman's agent was quoted as saying the player had had his appendix removed. Asked about this, Mangini said only, "Erik is working on his illness." Appendix? What appendix? On Wednesday, WFAN's Joe Benigno visited Jets camp. The most useful information he gathered there came from talking on the phone to reporter Sweeny Murti . . . about the Yankees. Other than fans, the biggest loser in the transition from Herm Edwards to Mangini might be SNY, which has a programming deal with the team. The network plans to show Mangini's Monday and Wednesday news conferences live. Nearly as scary is the fact charisma-challenged GM Mike Tannenbaum will have a weekly show on Thursdays. Quick, cue up more replays of the Mets' 1986 NL East clincher! Goodell is the son of a former United States senator. He knows football. He knows media. He knows politics. Roger, get back to your roots and save us!

CoachTsurfing
I love the way Mangini is handling the press. Those bastards have had it easy for too long. It so funny to hear them whining. Keep it up Coach.
Sperm Edwards
Well we've tried it the other way for the past five years & even in its pinnacle season (2004) we still lost 7 games. What do you say we try something else for a while?
faba
Most of the media wants to be cowered to like they are owed a favor. To make them work for stories is hard for them to accept. the funny thing is if you read the regular beat writers day in and out in the past they regurgitate the same story-most of the time all saying the same topic just a little different
BwanaZulia
Actually, this guy has a point. What is the point again exactly? I don't care if he mumbles, spits up, or wears a diaper. If Mangini wins, wins often, gets us to the playoffs and hopefully to the Super Bowl he will be just fine. Besides, I don't see where media relations has ANYTHING to do with winning actual games. Writers are just pissy because they don't have anything to write about. Tough luck. Go cover the Gints. It is, was and always be about winning. The one thing that goes beyond winning is character and up to this point, Mangini hasn't done anything to prove he not a man of character. Bob
As a Jets fan, I'm interested in the fact that Erik Coleman had his appendix out, and I'd like to know when he'll be able to play. Since Erik and the rest of the team don't call me with such info, I'd like the team to stop stonewalling and lying to the media. There's plenty of room between this crap and the dog-and-pony shows that Hermie used to put on. Most NFL coaches seem to be able to find the middle ground. He is changing a culture, building a mindset. Parcells did the same thing. Don't discuss injuries, they get no sympathy. Remember 2 or so years ago when Bernie Williams had the same deal during spring training I believe? That was used as an excuse all year long. After going to camp the other day and watching the injured players work out, I realized he is giving them zero incentive to be hurt. They don't get a day off anyway, they worked so hard on the sidelines it would have been easier to practice. Mangini will learn as he goes. But I for one am loving it. Did this guy just write that? Did he really friggin write that? Oh man I would pay any price to have that guy come on here and defend that. The Jets haven't won it all in my lifetime. So if they win the Super Bowl part of the fun for me will be what the players say on Tuesday. Oh okay. It is unbelievable how ignorant and arrogant that statement is. Like I need this guy to help me root for the Jets. That is just insane. My fun would come from being at the stadium on Sundays and being in my living room for away games and wathcing the TEAM win. Newsflash: When the game is over I rarely turn on the post game news conference. I know what I just saw. I don't need other people to tell me what I just saw. If this guy really believes what he just wrote he should be covering the W.W.E. Because he seems to be all about the Entertainment value of it. But that isn't going to help the team win games. Some would argue that the less information out there, the harder it is for other teams to game plan against us. Not sure if it is 100% true, but still. BZ

He's going to be just like BB in this area. The best was when the Pats had a game in Denver a couple of years ago and they just landed in Denver. BB was asked the status of Richard Seymour. He said "look at the injury report, he is listed as probable". Seymour never even got on the flight to Denver.
NIGHT STALKER
Down here in S FL, Saban is basically the same way...one major difference though...the media doesn't give him half the crap as Mangini seems to be getting. Oh yeah, you'll hear something from time to time, but nothing like the rags up north have been filling their story lines with.

I heard Mangini has a best friend from high school. And that Tannebaum is actually like his 3rd best friend. Word is though they are blood brothers so I agree they are pretty close. The irony here is this guy worships Herm Edwards, a man that didn't even have half the exp or success of Mangini, the guy he's blasting here. Edwards was hired by best friend Bradway, but now they are no longer best friends because Edwards was busy throwing him under the bus and Bradway no likey. The media in NY is ridiculous. I mean the media anywhere isn't all that great, but in NY it's just taken to an extreme. It's easy to see in sports because you have access to the exact same source material, and if you think for yourself you come to your own opinions. It's less so for things where you aren't seeing the facts for yourself, but make no mistake, "journalists" skew everything the way they want it so that in the end it's not even remotely objective. Chad Pennington was right when he mentioned this years ago. It's too bad Penny boy could never stay on the field, I would have loved to watch him constantly shove the media's words down their throats.
