Reasons to cut Chad Pennington

The Fat Man

Recommended Posts

All of sudden over the last 2 years..when he does play..Mr Egg cannot hold onto the football. His fumbles in the first preseason game reflect that he hasn't improved in this area. How long has he been in the league 6 years?

Any QB can be accurate on 2-5 yard passes! The last few years has Mr. Pennington proving that he cannot compete in the NFL and I would favor Brooks Bollinger over this guy anyday!

Chad do us all a favor....go back to Tennessee and make moonshine with Al Gore your homeboy who couldn't even carry his own home state in the presidential election in 2000. Tennessee's electoral votes went to Bush in 2000.

I also have a problem with investing all of our top draft picks on the O-Line and having a running game that could be lucky to break 750 yards with a QB who butters his bread on both sides before a game. This translates to an offensive line that will provide plenty of protection for a QB that coughs up the ball the one time he does get hit.

Chad is no one's hero and Jets fans better get used to this quick! I say start the kid!

I do agree with fatman about the RB situation, but we really needed to addrese the o-line. did you see our back-ups. My grandmother could have got through our 2nd string o-line. So do we waste money and draft picks on someone that can't make their own team or keep what we have and wait for the draft next year?

Another brilliant Fat Man Post

Dude got clocked by a blitzing LB in mid throw. F-ing Joe Montana wouldn't have held onto it

In slow motion, on the replay, I didn't get through a one mississippi count and Chad was hammered. I think the OT was Clement? Or some such sht.

Our depth chart is garbage, all around, not just on the O-line.

i agree with you on chad i think he was not a worthy 1st round pick. too soft for my taste. but this time they went tough over sexy and draft to guys with a mean ass motor who will be there for the next 10 15 years

as soon as fisher sees that, the titans and evry other team will blitz the hell out of noodle arm. i tought i actually heard the ball quacking on his passes over 7 yards. they should 'rotate' him to k.c. for a draft pick.

his dink and dunk will turn into the chuck and duck when the games count.

it was a safety blitz and the responsibility was the RB houston - he cut the player - which might have worked if it was anyone but a safety - the safety took the opportunity to go airborne - the fault was C Houston who could have stood his man up. Either way it was a jailhouse blitz - almost like a madden cheater play - over before it started.

Is he the answer?

If you have to think about it, the answer is no.

I will save you the braincells, the answer is no.

Trade him, if you can.

Cut him.

The Chad Pennington experiment should be over. He is not the answer to lead the Jets to the promised land. He is not even dependable enough to be a veteran back-up. His game has flaws. Why keep him when any half decent defense can negate him and take him out of the game?

Pretty dumb post. What's his record? Are you basing this on his performance on Friday night? Two 13 play drives, both into enemy territory one well into the red zone. Real horrid performance. Plus, you'd expect him to be rusty based upon being out most of last year and only really being able to throw recently. Is he the answer? Maybe not, but I don't believe there is a team wouldn't make. Plus, cutting him would be completely retarded because we'd take a cap hit for no reason and have questionable guys behind him. Do you want the Pats to pick him up?

You never give him credit for game control. Sure he doesn't put the team on his back and carry them, but he doesn't make many mistakes. He also controls the ball which can make a big difference to the D. I think I D last year was pretty good and simply suffered from not being able to get off the field and the difficulties of playing when you know you the D has to outscore the other team's O. They don't have that problem when Chad is on the field. A field goal can win the game if it keeps the other team off the field.

Yeah, I am basing it on his Friday performance in the preseason.

Are you serious? He has a winning record that is great. Wow.

How is he against good defenses? Horrible. How is he against winning teams? A little better. Who cares if you beat crappy teams when you get steam rolled by the good teams in your conference that you will need to beat to even get to the Superbowl much less win it.

Whether injury or just his lack of an arm, he has been subpar when it mattered the most since 2003.

Here is the reason you cut him now. The 2006 New York Jets are not going to be good. The time is now to take the hit and part ways. He is a 30yo that never had a strong arm coming off two surgeries to his shoulder, plus didn't he fracture his throwing hand once? He has gotten worse since his magical 2002 season. The chances of him having career revival now are slim.

While I would not say he would make every team, a team would take a chance on him. So what? All seriousness aside, if he is not the answer, cut him. I am not talking, "if we get a RB, a couple wideouts, an OL and the defense gets better and we become a balanced team we might go far in the playoffs." talk. I am talking when everything is on the line, he can deliver.

Short of a 2000 Ravens or 1985 Bears defense, Chad is never going to win as a starter because his 'control' while it limits the other team, it also limits your team. There are games you are going to need to score points or get down the field quickly. Chad has limited ability to do this.

Chad is what he is. An average QB. The Jets had their shot and missed in 2002 with Chad. That day has come and gone. If Mangini is smart and follows Belichick's example, he cuts the dead weight like Chad and starts planning for next year. Chances are, when the cap relief is realized, the Jets have more cha ching to spend and build a solid base on. Every snap that Chad would have taken has gone to Clemens and whether Clemens is the answer is a little better known.

He has ALWAYS won as a starter. Sorry that I think that's a good thing. Say any BS you want, but they won a playoff game in '04 and easily could have gone to the AFC championship. Was that because of him? Not entirely, but he didn't hold the team down so bad with his limited game that we weren't able to compete. He couldn't carry the team? Well how'd it do without him last year? That was an upgraded team over '04. He played well in '04. He is MUCH better than that stiff Baltimore had. True, he's not the greatest QB in history and he probably will not make the pro-bowl. That doesn't mean that you cut him. Unless you are trying to go 2-14. Don't you want to win as many games as possible? There are MANY reasons to expect him to perform better than he did last year and 2004. Will he? Maybe not, but he's still better than the others. I love you Pat fans. Win the super bowl and everybody else sucks. It's like saying why didn't the Pats cut Bledsoe? He was never going to win the super bowl. Too immobile. Teams can win without the best players at every position-remember your backfield when you started your run?

Always won as a starter? Maybe against all the bottom-feeding teams in the NFL.

Against top defensive teams he is 3-13 and has a losing record against teams .500 or better.

Is that what you call "always" winning?

And you're right, the Jets could have easily went to the AFC Championship game if they had a QB that day who would have done something.

PennyBoy led the Jets to 3 whopping points in 5 quarters of football that night.

Winning more games than you lose is winning. How many teams with a winning record cut their qb? How many teams with question marks all over the field cut a qb that has a winning record. Bottom feeders or not, the league is too even to make that kind of comparison. Maybe they lost to good defenses because our idiot coach ran the same plays consistently and stubbornly tried to run the ball even though Martin was averaging 2.8 yards per carry. Pennington did not lose the game to the Steelers. Even in your deluded mind you don't think they should cut Penny and go into the season with Ramsey or Clemens starting.

You want to argue if he's a great qb, good, average or below average qb? Fine. You want to argue about whether he should start on this team? Okay, but I don't think there is any question. You want to argue that he should be cut? When the cap hit is ridiculous? Doesn't make sense. He's on the cap for this year, I don't think cutting him now as opposed to after the season will make any real difference in our cap situation. If it will, show me the cap figures.

When your QB only puts up 3 points in 5 quarters of football, he was the main reason the Jets lost to the Steelers. If he even put up one TD, the game never would have come down to missed kicks. He failed miserably that night.

Ramsey should start the season with Clemens taking over after the bye week. PennyBoy has absolutely no future with the Jets.

The Jets can't cut him outright this year because of the hug cap hit. However, they can place him on the IR and then cut his sorry a$$ before he is due his March 1st 2007 roster bonus.

Chad's cap hit is going to be ridiculous no matter when we cut him. We won't be saving a dime by cutting him next year instead unless he plays like 3 games & reaches none of the incentives in his reworked deal.

Pennington was given the ability to re-collect all the money he "gave up" in March. Meaning he must have like $7M in incentives if he's the starter all year. Given that he wasn't even throwing then, his cap # (for salary) is really low, since those incentives weren't considered likely to be reached. If reached, then those extra incentive-dollars he collected come off the 2007 cap. If he starts all year (with marginal success but we don't think he's worth holding onto or starting anymore), he'll count millions (guess at least $6M) from incentives PLUS he still has $9M of his $18M signing bonus from '04 that still has to come off the cap. That's $15M of pure, unadulterated dead cap space in 2007 if we cut him before March 1st of '07. If we cut him after June 1st we can spread that over two years....BUT he's due another $3M in the form of a roster bonus in March. So cutting him after June 1st would drop the '07 cap hit from $15M down to like $9M. But then in '08 there would be another $9M coming off the cap - that's back-to-back years of $9M in dead cap space for a player who isn't here anymore.

We should've cut him before March 1st this year, taken the (then) $12M dead-space cap hit all in one shot, then he'd have been off the books forever. He'd have counted absolutely nothing for 2007 & beyond when we're going to start making a (realistic) superbowl push.

And here's the reason why you don't cut him

He's the best we've got.At this moment in time he's better than Ramsey,Clemens,Bollinger or any free agent quarterback.

Playing for next year is a dangerous thing. Our head coach is only a few years older than some of the vets on the team, people and players question on what he's done to deserve this job, people and players are already questioning the way he runs things. How much faith do think the players will have in Mangini if he benchs our best quarterback and allow Ramsey or Clemens to lead uso a 4 win season? In my opinion, there would be a good chance that the players wouldn't fight for Mangini in 2007 if this were to happen.

I disagree with a lot that has been said i this thread but i do agree with one thing that has been said,Chad Pennington is not going to lead us to any superbowl victories.I believe there was a time when he could of done it,but now he's just too fragile and too old to be our franchise player and to be our future.NEWSFLASH,we're not going to compete for a superbowl this season,we're going to suck this season. But we're going to suck a bit less than if we start Ramsey or Clemens.

We don' need a winning record or a playoff appearence this year, but we need to show we are heading in the right direction and we need to end the season on a high note.It seems Pennington has already got a hold of the new offense and understands what we are trying to do,when you consider the state of our O-line and the lack of running game,we need our leader to understand what's to be done and what is going on.Start Chad, let the O-line settle down and gel, allow the running backs to get into a grove, alllow the defense to start finding their way and then start Clemens. This should make things easier for Clemens to win a few games towards the end of season. We'll finish the season on a high with the players and fans hopeful that Clemens can lead us to a better season in 2007.

But no matter what anyone says,no matter how much Pennington is being paid,no matter how much we can save by cutting Chad now,it doesn't change the fact that Chad Pennington is the best quarterback we've got.

there's a huge flaw in your argument-he's not the best qb we have. bolly and clemmins are both more mobile and can pass better than him, especially over 10 yards.

face it, he's more of an anchor. just think of all the guys we lost who could have stayed if chad wasn't eating up so much space under the cap.

There's only 1 reason Chad Pennington should be cut.

A QB coming off 2 shoulder surgeries have no place on a rebuilding team run by a 1st time HC looking to make a name for himself. The Jets are either rebuilding or they're expecting to compete for the playoffs. If you're keeping Chad Pennington on the roster and starting him come opening day, you're telling me as a Jet fan that you expect to win.

There can be no other explanation for keeping this Player on the active Roster and starting him.

So is this Magini/Tannenbaum's fault or Pennington's?

These threads are written as if Pennington drew up the contract while other ones praise the new regime. You can't have it both ways.

If Bolly and Clemens were better QBs then why did Pennington win the starting QB job?

Being mobile and arm strength is only part of being a QB,the mental side is just as important as the physical side of being a QB.

I'm not sure Bolly is a better QB than Pennington even if Chad was throwing with his feet.

Clemens is a different situation. Mentally he is nowhere near Chad's level. He's a rookie. Chad himself barely took a snap until his 3rd season so he had plenty of time to study. I don't know how singular a talent his feel for the game is. Particularly since his education came at the hands of the most conservative OC in the game. Even when healthy, Chad checks down to his WR's too much. Anyone who says they never saw Moss beat his man by 10+ yards, only to watch Chad dump it off to Sowell or Martin, hasn't attended a game. They rarely show that on replays.

I wonder what percentage of Hackett's sissy little dumpoffs were in fact the primary play, rather than Chad just being afraid to air it out down the sideline with his WR's in a single-coverage foot-race. It's better for the play once it's started (a 6-yard dumpoff pass is better than an incompletion or an interception) but it severely limits the offense and, in doing so, severely limits the team.

Cut Pennington before game 1. An extra $2M to the 2006 cap (which we have plenty of room to absorb) saves us $3-9M in 2007. It also may save us a roster spot for 2006 if he's deemed too fragile for us to go into the season with 3 QB's. It also prevents us with "deciding" whether to drag the hit out & have it spill over into 2008.

If the OL is so bad the first couple of games, put Ramsey in there. Once they are capable of giving him a little time, put Clemens in there if we're losing or Ramsey's generally sucking. I don't want Clemens getting happy feet that he never grows out of because he went in there in Brick's first NFL start instead of his 7th. But he's not going to mature as a QB mentally until he's in the game.

That sums it up for my distaste. When a defense can cheat in and key on dumps and runs - we have handcuffs and leg irons on. I haven't seen anything different from Chad since 03 and not a lot of downfield activity even then.
