FIVE ISSUES FACING THE JETS AFTER THE FIRST PRESEASON GAME

BY DAVE HUTCHINSON

Star-Ledger Staff

1. PENNINGTON'S SHOULDER

QB Chad Pennington insists he's fine after taking a big hit Friday night from blitzing Bucs safety Kalvin Pearson, who hit Pennington as he was in his throwing motion. The play was eerily similar to the one on which Pennington was injured last season. Stay tuned.

2. THE RUN DEFENSE

It needs an upgrade, and finding a 350-pound nose tackle would be a good place to start. A quality nose tackle can make or break a 3-4 defense and the Jets don't have one. Dewayne Robertson is a defensive tackle who uses his speed. He's not a plugger who will clog the middle. The Jets are shopping.

3. RUNNING BACK

With Curtis Martin's status up in the air, it's not a bad idea to consider trying to get Earnest Graham from the Bucs, especially after the way he ran roughshod (17 carries, 69 yards) over the Jets. Graham is behind Cadillac Williams and Michael Pittman and won't see the light of day this season.

4. BACKUP QUARTERBACK

Rookie Kellen Clemens hit 10-of-14 passes for 92 yards Friday and made a case for himself -- a very good one in fact. But it still looks like Patrick Ramsey or Brooks Bollinger will get the nod at No. 2. Both will likely receive extensive playing time against the Redskins on Saturday.

5. WIDE RECEIVER

The Jets need a playmaker at wide receiver. Laveranues Coles remains Pennington's favorite target but third-year pro Jerricho Cotchery appears on the verge of a breakout season. He had three catches for 36 yards against the Bucs and looks like all he needs is a few more opportunities. Pennington's dink-and-dunk game to Coles is getting old.

The Jets do not need to go out and get a running back. They aren't competing for the Super Bowl this year. Why waste a draft pick or decent player of a 1 yr plug at RB.

If the season really goes in the tank, I would like to see Kellen starting towards the end of the year.

NT is a huge issue for the Jets right now, but again, don't break the bank on a stop gap player

What constitutes need? I think we are set at WR for this year. Not expecting much and it is a spot I'm sure they'd like to upgrade. One Playmaker and all our #2s will start looking a whole lot better. As for Cotchery, what would constitue a "breakout season?" I'd say that if he has the stats JMac had last year I'd be ecstatic. 35-40 catches is what I'd like to see. I doubt he'll get more than 50.

We have 1.5 issues facing us this year. It's only been 2 weeks and 1 preseason game of which I only saw the highlights but,

1.) We have deja vu all over again from 04 and 05 with the CP/QB situation. Healthy or injured, Pennington has nothing in his game to set off any red alert with the leagues defenses. They then get to cheat on anything past the flat and key on runs. Our WR's are good enough to get the job done and the RB by committee situation could work if the QB was different. Clemens or a Ramsey that gets struck by lightning has got to be the answer. They will have to earn the respect to make things different, but it's got to happen. Mangini had no choice but to start Chad after he looked ok in camp.

.5) The O line was upgraded and lord knows it needed to be. They need more than 2 weeks to become fully functional. Effective blocking by backs and ends will happen or there will be different people there.

The D will be ok and if the 3/4 can't gel with the current bodies we can always revert to a 4/3 and work towards the new scheme. The whole world can be different for the D if they weren't on the field 75% of the time and ever had a couple TD lead.

1. Chad's shoulder is a "news makers making news" situation.

2. True.

3. Still need to see more of those three playing. Houston looks like the better back.

4. Kellen is the BU.

5. I don't agree here. WRs are fine.

BZ

I agree with all 5 of these responses.

What could possibly lead you to make that statement?

"The D will be OK"

Dude, teams ran at will against the Jets last season and if Friday's game is any indicator, the run defense will once again be as pathetic as it was last year.

You can not win football games in the NFL if you can't stop the run.

Luckily (which you know damn well) pre-season is not any indication of how the team will do in the regular season.

I don't know but I have to agree with BZ-I mean come ON it WAS only a PS game it WAS all vanilla-I don't think we can seriously have this discussion until another 2-3 weeks.Everybody is ready to start Clemens and cut Pennington...what happens if Ramsey throws 3 TD passes Saturday night?or Bollinger scores 3 the NEXT week?(besides Fred J's orgasm)give it time there's still 4 weeks FOUR until the first game

sheesh we ARE an emotional bunch-reporters are right about that much

I don't think we will see a lot of the 3/4 once theres money on the table. Your favorite guy DRob can't play the scheme and Kimo isn't going to save anybodys day but they both should be serviceable in the 4/3. The addition of Kassel, Schlegal, and Bartons return gives good depth at LB and additions in the secondary make that an avg or better unit.

If there's one thing that should be osmotic to Mangini, it's being aware of getting your clock cleaned with the run and just because he'd love to have the 3/4 implemented and effective - if he doesn't have the people it's not going to happen till he does. I hope.
