Much needed Hit

Much has been reported since the start of training camp about how Chad Pennington is soft tossing the ball during practice and about the dink and dunk manner in which he has executed the offense during his 2 drives in the 1st preseason game.Paying close attention to the guy from what little i get to see,it occured to me that maybe the player had lost confidence in his ability to throw the ball down the field for fear of reinjuring his twice repaired shoulder.

With the way how Chad took the beating he received against Tampa and the way he rebounded with no ill effects, this fan is hoping that the player will now have the confidence to put his arm to the test as the preseason progresses.

Watching the Bengals against the Skins, and hearing about how Parmer doesn't have the confidence that his repaired Knee might withstand geting hit, makes me feel that Pennington may have been in a somewhat similisr holding pattern.I can only hope that against the Skins this weekend,Chad will have the confidence to throw the ball downfield, even if it's just throwing it away.

Any thoughts on this .

Tinstar....

What I wonder is if the arm strength just isn't there yet. Last year they said he could throw, work through it and the arm strength would improve over time.

I haven't read anything but I assume that is still the case. I remember watching Chad last year in camp. Thinking he was holding back. Now I think he is just throwing and he probably needs a few months of reps before we know for sure what he has for the long haul.

Chad has completely changed his throwing motion this year, and IMO not for the better. He is heaving it like a javelin. One thing is almost always for certain, when a person changes his throwing motion due to a previous injury it almost always lead to more injuries in the future. In any case, I would imagine Chad is going to have accuracy issues on intermediate to deep throws using s new throwing motion, and I suspect that a live pass rush in his face is not going to help things. The TB game did little to prove to me that his arm is well enough to play 16 live NFL games without either reinjuring himself or having a capability to make all throws necessary to help win football games.

Cut him before he takes a hit that places him on IR and renders him uncuttable. I don't want his cap hit to cost us $15M in 2007 or spill over through 2008.

Put someone back there who doesn't cause people to stop breathing every time he gets touched. Oh - and who can throw >15 yards without it being a fly ball.

Boozer while i will agree that the game didn't show much,it did show that chad had accruacy to the outside and a command of the offense. The thing i love the most was watching Chad audible to plays that the defense gave the offense instead of just running what the OC called from the sidelines.Chad threw the ball into heavy coverage alot, and it got where he wanted it to go.That showed promise, and all that was missing was him throwing the ball down the field.I want to see him throw 1 up,even if it's intercepted. This guy threw the ball 45+ yards with a busted up shoulder.People can say whatever they want, but i feel it's just a confidence issue.Sure he doesn't have the rpms of the top guys, but with his anticipation and precision,he's more than capable. This guy has a TD/INt ratio of something like +20 in the NFL.

Tin,

The problem that I have had with him from 2003 on until today is the defense noticably creeps up with him as QB. Jax last year was a good litmus to show what was already happening gfor 2 years. When Pennington left the game and Fiedler came in, I immediately told my buddy to watch the LB's, Safeties, and CB's. The Safeties were standing 8 yards off the LOS with Chad in the game and their first step was in towards the line at the snap. The LB's were either blitzing or speading a short zone to take away the flats. The CB's were up about 4-6 yards off the receiver. When receivers got a step on their CB, there was very little panic on the S to get back and cover. Chad RARELY looked out that way and when he did, the ball was underthrown often, giving time for the CB to recover.

As soon as Fiedler went under center, the Safeties lined up about 10-12 yds off the LOS and their first step was backwards. CB's were also giving a cushion. Now you and I both know Fiedler's arm is nothing to write home about, but it was enough to keep the D honest.

Now JAX might not be the best exampkle because you and I both know Chad was still hurt and had no business playing in that game or any game to start last year. But the opposing D's have been playing that way ever since OAK did it in 2002 and humiliated him in the playoffs. Chad's limitations hurt the running game if the OL is not stellar. When Martin won the rushing title, our OL was quite good. Mawae was just about peaking, Kendall had just joined and was phenominal, Fabini was still serviceable as his back injuries had not hindered him yet, and McKenzie was solid at RT. Chad had plenty of time to pick apart the short game and Martin had Mack sized holes to run through.

Combine the safeties being able to creep up because they don't respect the deep ball at all along with the fact that our OL is shotty in run blocking right now, we have a serious recipe for disaster. The only way to fix that is by having a QB who can punish the defense deep and do it consistently.

As much as I agree with you Boozer I am still going to give Chad the benefit of the doubt and to me his litmus test will be the Giants game. If at that point he is not throwing deeper passes then my red flag will go up.

I agree. The fact that he didn't throw long against TB could have been

because the CS told him not to and not because it was a confidence problem.

Third game of the preseason is when the teams air it out. If he's not

doing it then, they will have some explaining to do.
