OLYMPIC-SITE PANEL: STADIUM OK IS A MUST

By TOM TOPOUSIS and ANDY GELLER

NY Post

February 25, 2005 -- The head of the visiting Olympic delegation said last night that having a green light for the West Side stadium is crucial to New York's bid for the 2012 Games.

"We need a stadium, and we received assurances the stadium will be there," said Nawal El Moutawakel, the leader of the International Olympic Committee's evaluation commission.

Mayor Bloomberg is "a winner and his team is a winning team, so we trust that between the end of March or even in July, this project will come to an end," she told a news conference.

The International Olympic Committee votes in early July on which of five competing cities will host the 2012 Games.

The stadium, which faces significant opposition, must be approved by the MTA and the Public Authorities Control Board in Albany.

Moutawakel, a Moroccan ex-Olympic hurdles champion, said the planned stadium over the West Side rail yards could be an important legacy for the city.

"The site that has been shown to us, if it comes to an end, to an agreement, can be a very important legacy to the city, to the athletes, and to the Olympic movement," she said.

During the commission's four-day visit to the Big Apple, which wrapped up last night, the mayor assured the commission the stadium plan will be approved before the IOC meets in Singapore July 6 to choose the host city.

Bloomberg seemed pleased by Moutawakel's words.

"I said to them we believe that this city and the state will come together to construct a venue on the West Side," a beaming Bloomberg said.

Moutawakel said the 13-member commission had a "very productive" four-day visit.

In much the same language that she used in London, which the IOC committee visited last week, the 42-year-old chairwoman, who was educated in the United States, went out of her way to praise the enthusiasm of New York officials.

New York is vying with Paris, London, Madrid and Moscow for the 2012 games.

I wonder how much Bloomie bribed those IOC members to pretend there's a chance in hell they're going to let the Olympics be in the U.S.

Those IOC types like bribes. Ask the folks in Salt Lake City.

BOB!! I was just ging to say that they MIGHT not want to use IOC members as legitimate sources. All those quotes mean is that Dolan hasn't taken them out for lunch, Ferrari's, 8-balls, and hookers yet.
