THE EDGE -- ST. LOUIS VS. NEW YORK METS

St. LouisSTL.gifNL Central champion

Overall Record: 83-78

Home Record: 49-31

Road Record: 34-47How the Cardinals got there: As usual, St. Louis was a popular preseason pick to win the division. But key injuries and the surprising Reds prevented the Cards from taking command until late August. Then they nearly blew a seven-game lead in the season's final two weeks before rebounding to beat San Diego in the NLDS.

New YorkNYM.gifNL East champion

Overall Record: 97-65

Home Record: 50-31

Road Record: 47-34How the Mets got there: New York ended Atlanta's 11-year stranglehold on the NL East title by virtually wrapping up the division by the All-Star break en route to winning a league-high 97 games. Then, despite season-ending injuries to starting pitchers Pedro Martinez and Orlando Hernandez, the Mets swept L.A. in the NLDS.

Infield

The Mets get the edge because of SS Jose Reyes' range and a shoulder injury to Cardinals 3B Scott Rolen. First basemen Albert Pujols and Carlos Delgado both provide power. Delgado hit .429 in the NLDS, the first postseason series of his 14-year career. Mets 3B David Wright hit .333 against the Dodgers and, with Reyes, gives the Mets a fantastic left side of the infield for years to come. Cardinals SS David Eckstein doesn't have Reyes' natural ability, but he gets the job done. edge-slight-right.gifNew York

Outfield

Jim Edmonds is the key outfielder for the Cardnals. When healthy, he provides offensive protection for Pujols and is one of the best defensive center fielders. But his second half was filled with injuries. Speaking of injuries, Mets LF Cliff Floyd apparently will try to play after reinjuring his left Achilles' tendon in NLDS Game 3. Whether or not he plays, New York has CF Carlos Beltran and late-season pickup Shawn Green in right. St. Louis edge-moderate-right.gifNew York

Starting Pitching

Starting pitching could decide the series outcome. The Cardinals likely won't have ace Chris Carpenter available until Game 3 because he started -- and won -- the decisive NLDS Game 4. With Mark Mulder gone for the year, Jeff Weaver and Jeff Suppan probably will start Games 1 & 2 at Shea Stadium. The Mets, however, will be without Pedro Martinez and Orlando Hernandez for the rest of the postseason. Veteran Tom Glavine certainly can step up as he has previously, but New York's World Series hopes might hinge on Steve Trachsel and John Maine. edge-even.gifNew York

Bullpen

With Cardinals closer Jason Isringhausen out for the season, Adam Wainwright has stepped in and performed like a natural closer. Lefty Tyler Johnson has pitched well, and could be asked to retire Carlos Delgado or Shawn Green -- both lefty swingers -- in key situations. Hard-throwing Billy Wagner gives the Mets one of the all-time best closers. After a shaky start, he converted 22 of his last 23 save opportunities. Righty Aaron Heilman and lefty Pedro Feliciano will be asked to bridge the gap between the starters and Wagner.

The Ultimate Edge A team from New York had been expected by many people to slug its way to the World Series -- and that still might happen. Only it'll be the Mets, not the crosstown Yankees. The Mets' lineup, bullpen and home-field edge will be the deciding factors in earning the team's first World Series berth in six years. NYM.gifedge-moderate-right.gifNew York

I'll be at the game. Much colder than the weatherman predicted right now. Hopefully the rain will hold off.

The best thing is for no rain...do not delay this game till another day because you want the Mets to continue with the momentum from the Dodgers series.

Who is better the Dodgers or the Cards? If you think its the Cards then this series will go 5-7 games. If you think its the Dodgers, then this series should go 4-5 games.

Personally, I think it goes 5 games to the Mets.

LET'S GO METS!

The third game is a scary matchup Trachsel against Carpenter for even the most optimistic Met fan.

We'll worry about Game 3 when it rolls on. These Mets hitters aren't afraid of ANY pitcher right now, especially a right-hander. Let's worry about Game 1 first. If we don't win games 1 and 2, game 3 won't matter!

This just in: the number four starter for the cards is not Walter Johnson or Steve Carlton.

btw the football brawl is all over espn

Um, isn't Oliver Perez starting for the Mets tomorrow?

You could actually make the case that he is the worst pitcher to start a CS game in the past 10 years. I am not saying that Reyes for the Cards is any good. But the Cards will be favored in this game (means nothing I know).

Traschel took that honor last night.

Perez can dominate but also be terrible so we will see. Same for Reyes.

Mets need to win one game in St. Louis and then beat Carpenter again in game 6 at Shea to force a game 7. Tall order but I like us if we can get the series to 7 games.
