What is up with Schlegel? Official bust yet?

Rookie LB Anthony Schlegel, a third-round pick, was inactive for the seventh consecutive game this season.

Not Yet. Adams, Clemens, Schlegel and Smith are insufficient so far but they are not done.

If Schlegel still cant play well then quit as a player and become a pro coach.

smith isn't insufficient he's already made alot of plays. it's clear he's gonna be a usefull player. i think we should have him return punts. dwight is SLOW and only good for blocking.

I'm not really impressed by Dwight at all. Smith needs to be MORE involved in the passing game. The future of the Jets offense is in the hands of Smith, Leon and Cotchery.

i like having dwight in there because he's a GREAT run blocker for a WR... i'd really like to see smith get a chance to return punts like i said...

I think-no I KNOW some guys develop slower than others-we can't really assess A.S. yet-talk to me next summer and if he makes the team next year THEN we can say either aye or ney because if he is a bust he won't make the squad-again, unlike oh say Herman Edwards who kept guys around just BECAUSE he drafted them-case in point..well, there are many

 Wow, so he's a bust 1 year when he hasn't even been on the field consitently enough to get a good assessment of him:rolleyes: . You can't call a player a bust after 1 season, it usually takes 3 before you can truly label them a bust but atleast give him a season. Plus he has very good players ahead of him.

Ask me this mid-season next year and maybe I could give you a difinitive answer.

We have a lot of depth at ILB but it is strange that Cody Spencer is in the game and Anthony Schlegel remains inactive. Next year will be telling, if he even makes the roster.

Cody Spencer is supposed to be really good on special teams. Of course, he's also the guy that missed the block that led to Ben Graham's first punt block, so who knows :)

uh, he has been INACTIVE FOR SEVEN WEEKS on a 4-12 team, not even viewed valuable enough for Special Teams,,

Most 3rd rounders get seen earlier than this...

as a matter of fact, barring injury, name me the last time in NFL history that a 3rd round pick was inactive for 1st 7 weeks,,

Cody Spencer is the Special Teams Linebacker. Lots of teams have on ST specialist. Spencer replaced Myers who was apparantly McClover's replacement so his starting on ST instead of Schlegel isnt unusual. Its Riddle getting the ST start the past two weeks instead of Schlegel that is the cause for concern.

Southern, I'd be willing to be that other 3rd rounders have been inactive for the first 7 games, though I admit that its probably unusual (Bobby Carpenter has also been inactive for a few games for the Cowboys and he was a 1st rounder). The Jets were deep at one position going into camp and that was ILB. That doesnt explain the lack of ST play for Schlegel however. Maybe he made fun of Westhoffs cane or something.

Well, if we were so stacked at that position then why did we draft him. We could have drafted an o-guard.

You beat me to it :D

If he isnt even on the field, he's not doing very well.

If he isnt at least second team ILB by opening day 07= huge bust for the boar hunter.

I'd agree with that last statement.

As another OSU homer, I agree and am also concerned that Riddle is suiting up. I thought for sure that Schlegel would suit up after the week that Mangini anointed him the Practice Player of the Week. It is surprising that he can't even get a sniff on ST at least.

This thread may force me to look up my tc reports to see what I observed about him. I recall he didnt look too swift on STs, and may have been a little slow on picking up his coverages and assignments.

I wanted to wait, as I KNOW I was right on Rhodes, Cotch and Leon having big years, and called CP as the starter before anyone else. (Shameless pat on the back :D )

But I am curious to see what I wrote about Sch'l. When I get a chance i'll look it up.

The Linebackers arent listed on the depth 1-7 they're listed by position (but since he's the only one who hasnt played I see your point). He is third on the depth chart at ILB behind Kassell and Vilma, but the truth is that Kassell has been playing as Barton's backup. Thats some pretty tough competition and it is possible (I hate to break it to you experts, but its true) that Mangini never had much intention of playing him much on D this year. That does happen. It is entirely possible that Mangini and Tannenbaum are planning on making some off season LB moves and therefore see a greater benefit in playing Barton and Kassell to up their trade value than in playing Schlegel.

As I have said numerous times, the ST thing is much more worrying. He should be able to beat out Riddle. Schlegel's ST play was limited due to injury his Junior year and limited to return and FG Defense his senior year. That combined with Westhoff's notorious temper may have gotten him off to a bad start on ST. Who knows, but I doubt that it is a lack of speed or talent. Perhaps he believed that he could get some PT on D this season and didnt concentrate enough on ST.

Very nice find. I see several Canes on that list.

E Smith, Anthony S., D Strait and Pouha for the Jets.

Look, he is what- seventh on the depth chart of seven LBs?

If he isnt seeing the field on gameday, it's not because he is doing really well.

I don't even think I heard you mention him once JC in any of your (excellent) TC reports-I don't know maybe you WOULD have IF YOU WEREN'T LOOKING AT ALL THE MILFS!!!...Garb...you see how he is?
