NEW MILFORD, Conn. (AP) - Investigators were trying to determine who tossed a beer keg into a burning barrel at a party, causing a deadly explosion that sent metal shards slicing through a crowd of people, police said.

The explosion early Sunday killed Sean Caselli, 22, of New Milford. Seven other people were taken to hospitals with burns and shrapnel wounds, police said. Caselli was struck in the neck by a piece of flying metal.

Police Sgt. Lee Grabner said investigators interviewed witnesses Sunday to try to identify the person who threw a quarter-keg of beer into the flames, and to determine whether criminal charges should be filed.

Fires had been set in several barrels to keep people warm at the outdoor party in western Connecticut, said Police Captain Michael Mrazik.

"This is a certain tragedy," said Police Chief Colin McCormack. "However, nothing I have been apprised of to this point in this investigation, which I caution is at the very early states, indicates a deliberate act on anyone's part."

Ouch, I`d have been hopping mad if it was my keg...

Exactly, someone threw a quarter full keg of perfectly good beer into a fire. And there were countless bystanders that could have stopped him but didn't? Someone needed to die. :)

one thing about those teachers-I learned-which was a pretty good accomplishment being the lousy student I always was (read;dumbass). If it wasn't for art I never would have graduated

Okay, the keg was obviously dry as you cannot toss a full 1/4 keg anywhere, let alone onto a fire.

I hope Sean was the one who did it, otherwise some kid is going to jail.

Btw, do schools no longer teach Charles or Boyle's Law anymore? Gas expands when hot, people. If that gas is contained, it will still find a way out. Very quickly.

I swear this happens at least once a year.

When I was young my friends and I would never destroy a keg. As Haggis said those things have deposits. Back in my day they were $50.

my best friend Rich from Lynn, Mass said they used to steal them from the back of liquor stores and cash them in at another to get bread-friggin Pats fan that he is

Smart man. That must have been back in the day before they "tagged" kegs with the purchaser's name. Those were good days.

What happened to the tap in this fiasco? You have to put a deposit down on those as well.

Still Do. Deposits here at FSU run around 40-45 i think. For whatever reason, at one point last year we had 3 kegs sitting in our house. 2 of them were someone else's I believe.
