Report: Yankees to pick up $13M option on Sheffield

ESPN.com news services

NEW YORK -- Gary Sheffield was told Wednesday that the New York Yankees will pick up his $13 million option for next season, according to a newspaper report.

Sheffield

Sheffield said he was hoping to test the free-agent market and get another three-year contract, USA Today said in a story on its Web site.

"This will not work, this will not work at all," Sheffield told the newspaper. "I don't want to play first base a year for them. I will not do that."

Sheffield, sidelined from May 29 to Sept. 22 with an injured left wrist that required surgery, hit .298 with six homers and 25 RBIs in 39 games this season. He played first base for the first time in his major league career after he returned in September.

"I don't know what they're [Yankees] going to do," Sheffield said. "Maybe they picked it up just to trade me. If they do that, if I just [go] to a team for one year, there's going to be a problem."

A message was left by The Associated Press seeking comment from Sheffield's agent, Rufus Williams.

It's possible the Yankees are positioning themselves to trade Sheffield, as several teams are reportedly interested in a player of his type. The New York Daily News reported Wednesday that at least a half-dozen teams -- the Angels, Orioles, Cubs, Giants, Astros and Rangers -- are in the market for a power-hitting corner outfielder, and that doesn't include the Red Sox and Mets, who could also use the help. The Yankees can now prevent Sheffield from going to such rivals without getting anything in return.

One GM reportedly called Yankees GM Brian Cashman last week about Sheffield. "To be honest," he said, "I was kind of put off, leaving me to believe he's got at least a couple of teams really pushing him hard [for Sheffield]."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Have at it Gents. Is he staying put? If he's going to be traded, then where? For who?

They want to control where he goes. While I personally would love the draft picks inmstead, at least this way we get a couple of kids who may be prospects, and send Sheff away from where he can come back and haunt us.

I'm OK with this, I guess.

ya, thats the only thing that makes sense, ,i assume Lou will take him,,

Lou needs big bats in his lineup desperately. Sheff should do very well in Chicago. Lee-Sheff and A-Ram (if they sign him) would be a nice middle of the lineup.

A trade for Sheff would be basically a dump by the Yankees, and for a young prospect or 2 will get it done.

Yeah that's all the Sox want, an injury plagued roid head who cannot even field his own position anymore. Pass.

Yeah because the Sox have much better options in COCO Puffs and Trot Nixon.....Sheff can still play OF, not great ...but still has a hell of an arm

The Yankees will probably target bullpen help.

Nobody is giving up a young starter for Sheffield, thats for sure.

And you have to think the Yankees have a deal in place or several teams interested

before they officially pick up his option.

Agree teams are interested but wonder how those teams feel after reading Sheff's comments today.

A lot of teams would take him for a year but he is going to be a headache unless it's a trade and 2-3 year contract extension.

This will be interesting to see if Sheff has once again hurt his trade return value.

Hey this is a guy who purposely threw balls in the stands as a Brewer to force his way out.

He also warned any team that attempted to trade for him in 05 of the ramifications of doing so thus forcing the Yanks to abandon that idea.

george should send this turd to triple aaa

Well if the Yankees can get something for him that is good. But there is no way he can come back here. They need a real 1B next year. Let's get away from the All Star at every position theory.

I've been saying that for like 3 years now. Trust me, the sentiment always falls on deaf ears.

Sheffield would be unhappy if they didn't pick up the option; now that they did, he's mad anyway. Sheffield is such a miserable bastid that he wakes up and thinks of a reason to be pissed off all day. Wahtever. Yankees hopefully aheva destination in mind that can trun the angry guy into some useful parts.

Im pretty sure he once said if the Yankees trade me some place, I will make that place (clubhouse, team, city, etc...) wish they hadn't traded for me"

What has changed since then with Sheffroid*?

Supposedly a big reason they did pick up the option-they were scared that the Sawx or Mets would sign him, which is a pretty bizarre thought. Suspect Minaya and Epstein probably are having a laugh at the Yankees' expense. I can see all these teams that now feign interest only too happy to stick the Yanks with this jacka$$ and his $13 million.

There is no way the mets would pick this guy up. He is a malcontent and we have such a good clubhouse now. Maybe Boston might have but where do you play him? 1B? RF? he has stated that he HATES 1b. The guy is a big piece of shizz.

Turd status achieved.
