JetNation
The Tigers had a storybook season, playing for a title for the first time in 22 years just three seasons after losing an AL-record 119 games. But the final chapter was ugly. More...

JerryK
I think if they keep the pitchers and add a couple bats, then this isn't the final chapter. What will be funny is if Steinbrenner steals Rogers away after all the tar jokes here

I seriously doubt any pitchers his age are due to arrive here, except for maybe Moose, and he's a bit younger (a very little bit). If I was a betting man, I would say that the Tigers trade an arm for a bat this offseason.

Wouldn't surprise me.Bondy is a good strikeout pitcher, but has trouble going deep into games and is topsy-turvy. He'll throw a gem one game and give up a 7 run lead to the Royals the next. I can see Bonderman going this winter. He is 2 years from FA, and his value, at age 24, may never be higher for the Tigers then it is now, with the right combination of age, experience and salary (right now) to package for a slugger. The tigers have all the pitching in the world with more young arms coming. I say trade bonderman for a big bat and solidify your place in the AL Central. Blackout
GOB, how about bondo for sheffield*?
mbn007
GOB, how about bondo for sheffield*? That only makes sense for the Tigers if they think one year of a motivated Sheff will get them the where they need to go offensively. Sheff will be motivated big time in 2007, no matter where he is or what he is saying now. He is some 50 HRs from 500, and he wants another deal after 2007. He will be primed for an offensive explosiion in 2007. The Yankees know this, so they should not give him away cheap. Leyland also knows this, and may demand that the FO get him. I have read sporadic rumors that the Florida GM in 1997 was not enanmored of Sheff, as he was a whiner about his contract. That GM is now the Tiger GM, so this bears watching. mbn007
Do you really believe that teams will give young talent for second hand slop? You can mark it down now. If he gets near 500 plate appearances, Sheff will have 30+ HRs, 110+ RBIs, and hit over .290, with an OBP at .350 or higher. Some slop. The man is motivated to get to 500 HRs. He also wants a new contract, neither of which he will be able to achieve without a solid-to-great 2007. Book it.

Sheffield will be 38 years old. He is oft injured. He is a known malcontent. He is going to want an extension. The Cubs, yes. Tiger, no. For Bonderman-Preposterous. Unless you throw in Cano. If I was the Yankees, do i do it? Yes, reluctantly, as I would rather Sheff go to the NL. If I were the Tigers, do I do it? Age-wise, it hurts, but that is a lethal bat to add to any lineup. He makes the whole lineup deeper. He is also only your problem for 1 year, after which you can extend him, or rid yourself of your problem. Also, as good as he is, Bonderman is 2 years away from FA. He will be expensive. And the Tigers have loads of young arms. They also have an ACE in Verlander. Again, Sheff is not a left handed hitter, but he is as good as any that you will get for his production. And he will be a lot less expensive (I was going to say "cheaper", but when we are talking 13 million, that is a tough term to use ) then most anyone on the market, including Bonds, who may be more of a headache then Sheff, if that's possible. One mor ething. That 13 million is only 8 million for 2007, as 5 million is deferred. I doubt Sheff will ever negotiate a contract by himself again. Why would a WS contending team want a "problem" as you put it. They trade a great young arm, who could bring a lot more back than a Sheffield. That is all that I am saying. Again, the Tigers dream is a left hand bat and that is what they scoured for during the trade period. I can't see them changing that, just because the name is Sheffield. faba
Why would the Tigers want problem child Sheffield-it would make no sense to me. What they do will depend if they want to keep Casey also.

Read the other thread on Bonds. Whom would you rather deal with, Bonds or Sheff? Neither one will be a "low-maintenance" player.
