Jets gain 9.15 Million over the next 3 years.

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Although the Jets are sad to see the brilliant career of running back Curtis Martin come to an apparent end, the club will save $9.15 million in salary-cap room over the remaining three years of his contract, The Star Ledger has learned.

Martin, who signed an eight-year extension worth more than $41 million (not counting incentives) with a $10 million signing bonus in August 2002, is scheduled to receive a $3.25 million base salary next season and $8.7 million in base salaries in 2008 and 2009.

But with Martin's impending retirement, the Jets will save his base salary in 2007 ($3.25 million), 2008 ($4 million) and 2009 ($4.7 million) because base salaries aren't guaranteed and only be charged for the $2.8 million remaining on his pro-rated signing bonus. That charge will come in 2007.

Thus, the Jets will save $450,000 on the cap next season (his base salary minus his pro-rated signing bonus). When you add that to the $8.7 million saved in 2008 and 2009 the total reaches $9.15 million.

With the extra money, the Jets are expected to delve into the free-agent market this off-season and address needs along the defensive line, linebacker and perhaps running back, depending on what they do in the draft.

Looks like we'll be big players in the FA market next year... Thats how you improve quickly.

Not really. I'd prefer we continue building through the draft, and use our salary cap to re-sign our own players or mid-level complementary FAs, rather than splurge on big names. This offseason I'm sure the defensive problems and the right side of the line will be addressed. I think we'll be competitive next year, but it's going to be a 3 year plan before we really get good.

The jets have no FA's of note coming up next year. This is the perfect offseason to go out there and spend money on FA's in addition to the draft.

We didn't really gain anything on the cap. Another smoke & mirrors thing.

Anyone who thought there was even a remote chance of the Jets under Tannenbaum paying Martin $17M in base salary from '08-'09 (even if his knee wasn't cartilage-depleted) raise your hand.

Also his math makes no sense. Martin was scheduled to make roughly $20M from '07-09 in base salary. Yet he says we save $9.1M on the cap over that span. Using those #'s it stands to reason that there is $11M in prorated bonus money left to come off the cap? We gave Martin a boatload of money, but we didn't give him THAT much.

If he played in '07 his total cap # would be about the same as if he was released or if he retires (and that's without spreading a pro-rated bonus hit over two years). Why not keep him anyway then? Because then we'll have to still absorb 2/3 of that amount after '07. It doesn't magically disappear by keeping him on the roster next year.

I can appreciate all the affinity fans have for him as he's had a long & productive career, most of it with the Jets. But we shouldn't pass on a stud FA that could be the difference-maker for us so Curtis can have a 100-carry swan song in '07.

Where was the suggestion to keep him?

Where was the suggestion to keep him?

To me it was insinuated by Hutchinson stating we save all this money only because of Martin's possible (if not likely) retirement prior to the '07 season.

All I was saying is that even if he doesn't retire from playing, the Jets weren't going to pay him that money anyway.

These are going to be some of the top FA next year the Jets might be interested in:

1. Dwight Freeney, DE, Indianapolis Colts

2.Adalius Thomas, OLB, Baltimore Ravens

3. Nate Clements, CB, Buffalo Bills

4. Lance Briggs, OLB, Chicago Bears

5. Asante Samuel, CB, New England Patriots

6. Cato June, OLB, Indianapolis Colts

7. Eric Steinbach, G, Cincinnati Bengals

8. Leonard Davis, T, Arizona Cardinals

9. Ken Hamlin, S, Seattle Seahawks

10. Chris Brown, RB, Tennessee Titans

Stop it stop it stop it.

Sometimes we just want to believe. Life is good, the tooth fairy is real, Santa does exist, the pizza guy is just friends with Mom. We want to believe.

The Jets saved a lot of money by Curtis retiring. We will miss him. I refuse to believe anything else.

Bro, my paycheck bounced again. We need to go back to the roll of nickels.

Adalius has the type of size a Par$ells/Belichick LB needs. Briggs is close, but a bit light.

Chris Brown should not be on that list. He's a RFA but Michael Turner is the Top RB in FA. Freeney isn't a 3-4 DE. Thomas would be a very nice pick-up and of course bringing in Asante Sameul or Nate Clements would be great.

Turner will get more then he's worth i'd much rather draft another RB if leon isn't the starter. Signing RB's in the free agent market never seems to work out...

Our last RFA signed RB worked out pretty well (Curtis Martin).;)

Bold might be good options

1. Overrated, don't know about him as an OLB, wayy to expensive

2. Could work in the 3-4, don't know much about him, could be worth a look, is he fast enough to play OLB?

3. Overrated, to expensive, don't need a corner that bad to spend money on him

4. Might be expensive, don't know about him in the 3-4, benefits from playing with a lot of great defenders around him, isn't really a stand-out on that defense but still might fetch a high price in FA

5. Has improved his play over the years, fairly young, has played well for the Pats and played in a lot of big games, might not be to expensive, familiar with Mangini, worth a look

6. Small, don't know about him in the 3-4, might be expensive, don't like anyone on the Colts defense for the 3-4

7. Fairly young, Mangini supposedly likes smaller athletic o-lineman anyway, might not be to expensive

8. Don't want any parts of that Cards line, don't know about him as a good run-blocking RT, might be expensive without a clear cut top FA OT

9. We're fine at safety, don't need to spend money on him when we have much bigger needs

10. Way to injury prone

The Jets need to make a strong run at Matt Starks from Pittsburg. He's pretty young and is a very big man and has done well run blocking for that Pittsburg offense. Will be hard to pry away from Pitt but he'd be a great pickup.

As far as Michael Turner the Chargers will but a high tender on him and he's worth a 2nd at best and even that might be to much. I wouldn't be to upset if we gave up a 2nd for him only because we have 2. We need to save our picks though we can find a power back elsewhere.

The Pats will either give Asante Samuel a long-term extension or they will hit him with the Franchise Tag.

There is no way in hell Samuel will hit the open market.

I know he'll be hard to get away from you guys. I hope they don't franchise him. I think we have a good shot if they don't.

This is the most probable scenario but the Pats have let guys walk before and if they do the Jets should be waiting and chomping on the bit for Samuel.

Thomas should be the biggest guy on our radar if he's available without a franchise tag attached to him. Has done well in both the 3-4 and 4-3, gets to the QB, and is HUGE for a LB at 270 lbs. If this team wants its Willie McG type OLB, then this is our man.

Agreed. He'd have the biggest impact.

I really think Starks from Pitt should be our top priority. He could really make a huge impact in our run game and he's younger. Then we could go all defense in the first few rounds of the draft.
