madmike1
you would think but who knows.. this front office is going to have some challenges getting their type of players in here while continuing to win. The biggest need is gonna be DL becuase they can go out and sign briggs or thomas for OLB. They should be able to fill all the other holes besides DL pretty easily through FA. The draft is gonna be a HUGE test for them to draft the RIGHT defensive linemen...
4HCrew
Briggs is going to want a king's ransom and then whatever he gets Vilma will want close to the same. DL is going to be the key and they are going to be hard to come by with more teams doing the 3-4 thing

PFSIKH
Vilma? at what point should the Jets extend him? and how much should he get? They, that is Mangini, must decide if he is going to continue trying to force that square peg (Vilma) into the round hole (3-4 defense). If he decides to fit the defense to the player, then sign him. If not, trade him. He should be able to fetch you picks and a player.

PFSIKH
Vilma would be fine in the 34 if we had a dline who kept him clean. No DL is going to keep him totally clean. That is why Par$ells and Belichick like bigger LBers. Easier for them to shed blockers and make a play. All the 3-4 teams deploy LBers over 240. The Jets either need to change the defense or more Vilma.

PFSIKH
It's more imporatnt for your OLB's to be big. Dude, you do not want any tiny inside backers either. JW That is a good point. Here is my thinking on that. Between Belichick, Par$ells and RAC, they have almost a century of NFL experience. Yet, they still want big LBers. I am guessing that working with a smallish LBer is not worth the hassle to tweak your D to cover their limitations.

He'll be perfectly fine when we bring in a dline that can protect him. There are 3 other LB spots where we can go for size too.

There are 3 other LB spots where we can go for size too. Again, short of drafting a future HofF DL, then you start altering your gameplan to cover Vilma's lack of size. It is going to be hard enough to find a big NT that can occupy blockers. Especially, when the Par$ells/Belichick technique are usually the polar opposite of what the rest of the planet wants. Vilma is talented. No doubt. Finding big LBers that can play is problematic in of itself. Vilma could be a valuable commodity to trade for a young big LBer that is a better fit. Or a big NT that can occupy two people and allow the LBers to make plays.

KSJets
What if they just ask Vilma to put on an extra 10-15 pounds in the offseason? He's not asked to go sideline to sideline anymore so the drop off in speed shouldn't be too drastic. Let him go to a few buffets with Mangini, DRob and D'Brick

Bryan Thomas is actually a decent size for an OLB. Ten extra pounds really isn't that much though. Adding ten pounds of muscle would help him fight off the blocks a lot better. What good is sideline to sideline speed when there are so many speed bumps disguised as offensive linemen in the way

I'm surprised Mangini hasn't experimented with Vilma on the outside. Unless he totally sucks in pass coverage, why not give him a shot at OLB. His talent and skills are be wasted on the inside due to DFat's pathetic performance so far this year.
JetsMan57
Vilma on the weakside would make a lot of sense, and Hobson is better suited to play the middle in the 3-4, he will give guards and fullbacks a much tougher time with his thick 250 pound frame. 124
Vilma & Barton will look much better in the 3-4 if we can find a NT in the draft to replace Robertson in 07...so with that in mind I say when it's time to give him a new deal (before the 08 or 09 season I believe) we should hopefully have a true NT sitting at NT and in that case I would extend him long term to keep him in Jet green until his 30's.
